It says "Olive-skinned" right there in the definition. Obviously it's not meant to be a synonym of 'black'. It is odd though that Benjamin Franklin would refer to Swedes and Germans as swarthy, and not white. I would think Italians and Greeks would be more the olive-skinned, Mediterranean types.
