6/27/09 - Saturday - Big K's Powerlifting Championships - Strongsville, Ohio
I always sleep like shit before a meet, and this time was no different. Not a big deal though, considering I had to get up at 4:30am if I wanted to be the first to weigh in and start bloating up. The weight cut went perfect. I started at 228 last Sunday, and this morning I stepped onto the scale at 218.6. I pissed out 6 pounds Friday night. The article I linked earlier works really well and is the only way I would ever consider cutting for a 2 hour weigh in. Bookmark it all competitors.
I pounded a shit load of food and fluids afterwards. I was in the third flight so I had an extra hour and half to let it all settle. Equipment check in, they said no the EliteFTS knee sleeves. A few people had them and they convened and decided since they were double ply and had an unsponsored logo larger than the max size they weren't going to allow them. Since they are explicitly banned by the rulebook starting in a few weeks, no biggie. I really didn't feel like dealing with putting them on anyways even though it would cost some squat pounds. Dave Ricks is a national judge and I had no real recourse at the time even though I technically believe them to be legal. I was bitching up a storm about them allow the Inzer ones to begin with on the USAPL forum so no need to be mega hypocritical.
Squat
Squat warm ups felt like total shit. Shitty enough I went dropped my opener to 451 before the flight started. I did 2 singles with 405 and felt like I couldn't get another rep. I was worried. But viola, magic happens on the platform. I dunked 451, and went to 473 to stay ahead of my competitor who went 462. This one rolled off my back a little in the hole but was also easy. I went 227.5kg on the last one, and nailed it. Not much left in the tank. My first 500 pound squat. Tits. +6 all time PR, +16 meet PR (and a weight class lower).
1 - 205kg (451) - 3 whites
2 - 215kg (473) - 3 whites
3 - 227.5kg (501) - 3 whites
Bench
Bench was an abortion. Here is the only place I felt the cut effected me. I missed my opener with 308, and had to redo it. I did it, but it was hard, and then I went to 319. This went up ok, probably could have handled 325 but no more. Oh well, bench is a pussy lift anyways. I knew bodyweight flucuation was a killer for bench going into the cut, so I had just planned to play it by ear here anyways and made a good adjustment to adversity. +9 Meet PR.
1 - 140kg (308) - 3 reds
2 - 140kg (308) - 3 whites
3 - 145kg (319) - 3 whites
Deadlift
I set my opener light, at 245kg (540). My closest competitor missed his 501 squat and jumped too high in bench and barely missed 352, so I decided I had a good enough lead that I was going to go straight to 600 (272.5kg) on my second. This is the goal I have most wanted since I started the log. I pulled 540 without much of a thought, then got psyched out of my mind. I ran up to the bar and decided to pull until my back exploded. I grabbed the bar, and what seemed like two minutes later I locked it out. On video I think it took about 10 seconds from start to finish. The head official running attempts told me it was the longest successfully completed lift he had ever seen. I passed on my third because my hamstrings started cramping so bad I couldn't stand up straight. No more pounds left here anyways. +15 meet & all time PR
1 - 245kg (540) - 3 whites
2 - 272.5kg (600) - 3 whites
3 - Pass
Overall, I am fucking stoked. I totaled 1422 and won the 220 raw open. I made my first 500 squat and 600 pull, and did while cutting weight for the first time and with only a 2 hour weigh in. Back to training. I need to strap on the feedsack and fill out to 242 like a grown ass man.
