Which was your favorite movie thus far this year? Wonder Woman for me

All the movies I've seen this year were meh. One of the worst years for movies in recent times.

Logan and Split were good
Get Out was original, thumbs up.
Spider-Man I enjoyed
Wonder Women was a 7 for me. Nothing amazing, the fight at the end was one of those ( almost defeated you but nope wait, almost got you, etc)
Dunkirk was good but not Nolans best, imo.
Baby Driver, I have not seen but it's been getting good reviews.
John Wick 2, good popcorn action flick. Lots of head shots.

War for the Planet of the Apes-it was ok.
Guardians 2-meh

Of this year's films, I think I've only seen Wonder Woman, Guardians of the Galaxy and John Wick 2.

Comparative rating:

10 - ...
9 - ...
8 - Wonder Woman (Because it wasn't that great. Good by virtue of not being terribad.)
7 - John Wick 2 (Awesome action, completely nonsensical plot)
6 - ...
5 - ...
4 - Guardians of the Galaxy 2
3 - ...
2 - ...

The more I think about it, the more Guardians of the Galaxy sucked. The only thing I liked about it was Yondu. He had some great interactions, lines, and his redemption arc as well as the father-son arc with Peter made it worthwhile. Plus, the arrow - as goofy as it is as a gimmick, was pretty cool in the way he took out the entire ship of mutineers. Otherwise, an incredibly blah, bland movie that was nowhere close to measuring up as the first. Humor was predictable and fell flat most of the time and the soundtrack was nowhere near as catchy or befitting what was taking place on screen, either.

John Wick 2 was more of the same, but in a good way, as much as it was overkill. It just became numbing after a while of Keanu mowing through dude after dude after dude in pretty much the same way, with psychic levels of awareness as to where the next baddie was coming from. Sure, he's not the boogeyman. He's the guy you send to kill the boogeyman. That's how badass he is. But jebus, too much is too much. I got badass fatigue and don't know if I can get it up for round 3.

Wonder Woman. Not bad in the way it could have all been screwed up, but wasn't. The only problem is that this was yet another origin story. Fucking enough with the origin stories. We all know the back history of all of these characters, we don't need to see Year One for every fucking one. We just had Wonder Woman go toe to toe with and tanked shots from Doomsday. She upstaged and made Batman and Superman sidekicks in their own movie with her badassery when she showed up to save Batman. Wonder Woman gets a +1 for a great soundtrack. That wailing banshee rock cello theme fits her perfectly and kicks everything up a notch. Unfortunately, I don't feel any single scene of hers merits rewatching like the epic final battle in BvS.

So unless a near perfect 10 like Fury Road shows up some time this year, I'm going to consider it a sad year. I'm hoping Thor Ragnarok fixes the year in action movies.

I haven't seen Logan, but I think I've also got comic book movie fatigue and am going to save myself for Thor 3. Man, that shit looks epic. Some of those scenes look epic. And as I mentioned in the Thor thread, both Chris Hemsworth with the new haircut and Cate Blanchett as Hela both looking sexy as fuck.

Damn it's been a poor year for movies, my daughters loved Wonder Woman but they are teenage girls and I have zero inclination to watch it.

No desire to watch wonder woman. Years from now when it is on TV regularly , I still won't give a shit.

Logan is probably a good one if your getting a bit tired of the genre, doesn't really follow the recent superhero formula that much spending time on more down to earth drama.

Its the kind of film some people might loath I spose but again I'd recommend Baby Driver, yeah theres no getting past its hipster nature but those aspects of the film are well done and don't outstay there welcome for me feeding into a great Tarantino style action drama.

Ghost in the Shell was I think rather unfairly treated by reviewers who wanted to ride the whitewashing hobby horse for and tedious Okatu who loath any adaptation. Ok it was rather more blockbusteish than Oshii's anime films but within that context actually very well done for me, some excellent visuals and an effective story.

Atomic Blonde is definitely worth a try if you liked John Wick I'd say, perhaps a bit flimsy in plot but a nice style to it and arguably better performances and more brutal action.

I'm having trouble understanding why no one seems to give GotG V2 any love. It was one of the most satisfying films I've seen this year. Just as fun as the first. That opening scene was brilliant.

Wonder Woman was terrible.

Dunkirk in IMAX was excellent. I enjoyed Spider-Man: Homecoming as well.

Logan and Dunkirk.

I thought Wonder Woman was ok, but nothing special. Thought GoTG was better. Though WW will almost assuredly be better than Justice League.

Get Out
Wonder Woman
Logan
Spider-Man Homecoming
Guardians of the Galaxy II

I watched Sicario the other day that movie was really good. I also watched the new Guardians of the Galaxy and thought it was pretty shitty. Green chick is hot though.

Haven't seen a ton of movies this year but Dunkirk was by far my favorite. The worst was King Arthur, Jesus fucking Christ that was an abortion of a movie. Loved Guardians 2 as well. I thought it was funnier than the 1st (I'm Mary Poppins y'all!), but the pacing wasn't as good.

Just saw Wonder Woman last weekend and as someone who's sick to death of superhero movies I actually really enjoyed it. Probably cause it involved Mythology and WWI which both made for cool settings. Only thing I didn't like was that the Ares actor looked a little bitch rather than a God of War.

I turned it off halfway through honestly, whereas I loved the first one.

I'll go back and finish it at some point.

Tie between Logan and Wonder Woman. Baby Driver was decent too.
