Movies Which Movies do you think are massively overrated?

I found it odd there was even a story here anyone wanted to see. Imagine a movie about Michael Jordans wife? Or A Superman movie that just had Lois Lane?

In my reading on the men I've known, most of them don't choose very interesting women, they pick trophy wives, usually ones who just aren't very bright. As I said, I think the reviews are being kinda soft because it's a girl director and a relative of a great director. It was a well made film, no doubt, but it just wasn't very interesting and that's a problem for any movie. I really didn't expect much but I wouldn't have minded being surprised.

The life of Pi was a horrible pile of pseudo- religious bullshit.
The last Joker movie is good but not a 10/10 masterpiece as every edgy kid says.
pi was so pretentious I turned it off, told my buddy who recommended it and he got offended and tried to insinuate I was too stupid to understand it. I just told him I don't like people or movies hung up on their intelligence, it's bullshit.

Citizen Kane
that's one of those I can recognize why it's so highly regarded but it was pretty slow and boring. Placed in context of it's time it was amazing, it's the only film from that period that seems timeless.

It's seven now that I think about it. I'd put Ikiru, Throne of Blood, The Bad Sleep Well, High and Low, Red Beard, Dersu Uzala, and Ran above Seven Samurai. I'm obsessed with Dostoevsky and Shakespeare and most of these are heavily influenced by the two. I still love Samurai though. I always show that or Yojimbo to people as a gateway to his work.
fair enough
seven has a fun factor that I always enjoy more than the others
but I would rank
nora inu
bad sleep well
yojimbo
drunken angel
ran
and sanjuro up there as well

Big Lebowski by FAR. One of the few movies i couldn't make it through
I tried watching it once, but couldn't get through it. I specifically refrained from not mentioning it, because I only gave it one shot.

Yeah, I have to say this one too. I didn’t think it was all that great, but everyone else sure did.

Shawshank redemption for sure.

You son of a bitch.

Saving Private Ryan. D-day scene was very cool to watch but the flick just felt like it never attempts to say anything novel about war. Kind of just Spielberg using the WW2 as chance to direct big scenes. Hollywood goes to WW2 for a few hours.

Thin Red Line had far more to say and far better performances from its actors and sits with me to this day.

SPR says absolutely nothing about war but Spielberg is used to saying absolutely nothing. Schindler's List in my opinion is a terrible movie just because it said absolutely nothing about anything. I didn't think it was possible to make a movie vapid about the holocaust but he did it. All the bad guys are bad and all the good guys are good. Bad guys do bad things. Good guys do good things. The holocaust was bad.

12 Year Slave is another movie that I just got bored by. The director is a good director. Shame I thought was an amazing and nuanced film. 12 Year Slave slams you like a sledgehammer with its bluntness and rose colored glasses for certain characters.

Been awhile since I watched it but it seems like one of those films which many people praise it for the wrong reasons ala Fight Club, my memory is it was really a film about obsession, that all the maths and conspiracy stuff(which some seem to focus on) doesnt actually make much sense if you really think about it doesnt take away from that.

I feel like The Game gets underrated for the same reasons, its a bit easier to pick apart the conspiracy if you want to but really that's not the point of the film, the journey Douglas's character goes on from an isolated damaged man to someone more humanised is.

any of the Star wars series made from 2015 onwards.
Any movie that Rotten Tomatoes give epic scores to, usually means that they are shithouse.

Any movie that fart sniffers choose to hold above ordinary people is criminally overated.

People that do that ought to have their asses kicked by real men.

I bet you think Hillbilly Elegy was a masterpiece because it featured 'real people'.

The game gets worse everytime you watch it.

The film is something of an anti-mystery. All of the set up and no real payoff.

But once you know whats going to happen the film is basically just riding off of Michael Douglas' charisma.

never saw it but I love Mel as a director, he's brilliantly deranged. Didn't like Passion but I loved apocolypto, that was a work of demented genius.
I think Braveheart is a pretty straightforward movie but it is batting a thousand in execution. I would say it's like Top Gun: Maverick in that regard but superior.

Oh it needs to be said that the original Top Gun is an awful boring piece of crap that thinks it's a music video.

All the unintentional gay stuff is funny for about 10 mins before even that gets tiresome.

Dang, a lot of great movies from the last three decades have been called overrated in this thread, I would love to see what people consider masterpieces if things like Godfather 1/2, Forrest Gump, Braveheart, Shawshank are considered overrated…..

I can understand if certain movies aren’t your cup of tea, but can still be considered great. I get bored every time I watch Alien, but I can objectively say it’s a really good movie, just not my thing.

A film can be really good and still overrated. Godfather 2 is a very very good film, but it has a few flaws that get overlooked, handwaved and twisted into actually being strengths.

Forrest Gump is a very charming, beautiful movie with a lot of heart, but the film kind of relies on historical pop culture references to move the story along to cover when a lot of shit just isn't really happening.

Shawshank doesn't really have any major issues, but it's basically a grown man's fairy tale love story that relies too much on fantastical and somewhat unbelievable events to be enjoyed.

Again, great movies. Still overrated.
