The more i think about nicks record the more confused i get when it comes to his place amongst great fighters of the sport.

He has a tremendous amount of finishes against average to slightly above average fighters. Daley, whitemare, frank.shamrock and robbie are all good wins. He doesnt have huge names in the win column other than an already broken down bjand a young robbie but i think he gets tons of style points bcause of his unique striking.and his suprisingly cerebral ground game.

Is nick a top 10 ww all time? Is he a top 20 or 30 mma fighter all time? Are we giving him too much praise or is it not enough. Im honestly confused with where i place him all time.

He might edge top 10 WW but definitely not even close to top 30 fighter of all time.

EDIT
Usman
GSP
Hughes
Hendricks
Woodley
Condit
Lawler
Shields
Militech
Wonderboy
Fitch
Nick

Thats 12 but hard to say who doesnt get the nod in top 10

like all time? for welterweights he’s definitely top 20. doesn’t have many wins over ranked opponents though. gomi and daley are the only ones i can think of.

A true legend and one of the greatest fighters ever. War Nick.

Legend and pioneer without a doubt , hall of fame career ufc title or not
Anyone who goes the distance with gsp and anderson Silva deserve there spot on some kind of list

He's kinda like BJ in that Nick was his own worst enemy. Where BJ didn't have the heart to train his ass off when he had some of the greatest God-given talent in the history of the sport, Nick just wouldn't play ball even on reasonable things like pre-fight press. I don't think Nate is as good as his brother, but he was/is able to keep the Stockton attitude while still doing what is necessary to work with the brass and stay in business. Nick couldn't, or wouldn't, and it's a damned shame. I don't believe he's top 10 WW in any way, results wise, and is lucky to be top 15. Again, it's a damned shame.

I still can’t believe he had those two pitter patter sparing matches with Carlos Condit and Anderson Silva. Those could have been amazing

A lot of fighters goes the distance with GSP lol. They are all legends then ?

@bjpenngoat you certainly are the king of open ended question subjective questions.

So let's put some context to this thing. ELO isn't perfect, but at least it's mathematical. And the more fights a guy has, the better it is (and Diaz has a lot). So in this case, ELO is a good base line.

Here is an ELO ranking that has him #17 @ WW. That feels too high. And here he's #27 @ LW, probably due solely to the Gomi fight.

CONCLUSION: 17 is too high. So let's call him lower-top-30 of all time.

There. Now if you debate me, you can debate actual lists.

Beating a dead horse. Its beatable dead horse because he had lots of skills and has a huge fanbase. But he is not very high on any list imo

GSP, Hughes, Shields, Woodley and Lawler (despite their fight) are ahead of him. Then it gets closer.

Anyone who lasted 5 rounds with gsp is certified.
That was my first thought. He never seemed like he didn't belong in the ring with an opponent, which isn't true of some guys. I would add that he was stubborn and in some respects had a low fight IQ, refusing often to figure out how to gameplan a win using smarts and strategy or by training for specific styles. Diaz actually has pretty good TDD, but was often too convinced in his bjj, so he ends up on bottom doing good stuff, but not enough to win the round. And then we listen to him complaining about the scoring or the UFC rules (or whatever) compared to Pride.

He was right there with Condit, he hung in there with Silva (clear loss, and this was not a prime Silva). His early UFC losses were all really close too--Karo, Riggs, Sanchez. I never saw the Sherk fight, so I'll leave that out.

As hard as he worked in terms of training and cardio, I think his attitude held him back--excuses and complaints don't get anyone over the top. It's just not the right mindset.

As a huge Diaz fan, I agree. I loved him for his style and in cage attitude. Not because he was great.

I agree about Silva. Everyone and their mom went the distance with GSP. Even my mom. She said GSP had good top control but couldn’t finish her.

Nick was a career-gatekeeper who's attitude and demeanor made him resonate with a lot of mma fans, to point where he has consistently been overrated. The guy was a good, well-rounded fighter, but far from elite. Let alone on an all-time scale.

His all-time resume is about one notch above Lytle's, and one notch below Kos' IMO.

huge nick diaz fan. while people say he has been consistently overrated, he was the kind of guy that could turn it on and beat anyone at any time. kinda like masvidal has been doing for a year.

hard not to tune into a nick diaz fight. i'd put him down as a fan favorite with a real following that existed outside of ufc hype train
