News When did PPV's become not worth the money for you?

I used to buy UFC PPV's all the time. I would either pay and watch them myself or invite a few friends over and split the cost. I first got salty when they introduced ESPN+ and you had to be a monthly subscriber to buy PPV's but I subscribed and still bought the occasional PPV. Then they just kept increasing the cost again and again on top of finding out that the most fighters don't see a fraction of the money and I lost interest in buying PPV any more. It's like when they raise taxes to a certain point that you just find ways to get around paying taxes, I got to that point with MMA PPV whether it's UFC or the organization that I posted the link for, the BKFC. If you exceed a certain price point people will just look for better ways to steal your product.

ESPN era was definitely the start. I had fightpass at the time and was part of that issue where the first ESPN PPV wouldn't work between the 2 platforms.

I only buy stacked PPVs these days. Last one I remember was probably Volk Vs Islam 1, but I think there has been one more since. I usually stream these days but have fightpass and will watch Fight nights religiously.

This was the breaking point for me. That ESPN+ requirement not only made me stop buying PPV's, but it made me stop watching the sport for a couple years.

Now I'm at the point where I'll occasionally watch an illegal stream, but honestly if they found a way to stop those, I'd just stop watching MMA altogether. It's not worth the price

I was at a similar stage, rang to cancel the sports package (but keep whatever else that my wife likes), and weirdly they gave me a cheaper deal than the price would be after cancelling the sports, and the new package and price included the sports package, plus other movie stuff we didn't have. lol

So I guess the 'free' cards really are free for me now. I try to make the most of it, take some time out from life and get lost in the fights.

Also, since then regarding the PPVs - I have tried to make it a bit more worth it, by putting more into the experience. I follow newer fighters careers a bit more, post here a bit more (always helps - there is a lot of knowledge here amongst the sass lol), get a bit invested in some of the drama, and also get some good food and drink prepared. Make a big deal out of it. It works for me anyway - I get more pumped up.

Don’t know enough people that are interested in getting the cards anymore. Last one we got was prob 10 years or more.

Luckily they allow two accounts to be signed into ESPN+ at once, that’s how I’d split it with my dad. After this last price hike to $80 my dad won’t split it anymore lol.

See my post above (two posts up, replying to @Fedorgasm), give em a call, see if there is anything they can do!

Some are great some are terrible. If a card is in Aussie or Canada it will be terrible. Dana hates Canada an Aussie taxes are crazy plus location.

Last ppv was greatness and this next ppv is STACKED

When they got above $29. Tickets to the events were online $25. Today's prices are beyond outrageous at this point. I'd rather buy a good game and have that game for years than waste it on a ppv that I can watch for free.
Am I trippin or did your AV change then change right back?

when it went behind a pay wall to even have the opportunity to see the event as others have stated

i have been a scumbag from the start. my whole MMA multimedia experience has always been illegal because that was the only way to get Pride and early UFC videos when i was a kid. you're either dvd/tape trading, downloading the events off limewire/napster than later on torrents, or you're shit out of luck. so i've only paid for a handful ppvs and completely stopped around 2011. i don't care that much about MMA anymore and barely watch any event fully because it's just a huge time commitment so if they somehow stopped illegal streaming, i just would stop watching MMA and concentrate on the other hobbies i have in my life.

I am about the same as you. But I "departed" the paying side wen ESPN+ came around.
But I now either watch with friends, or I don't watch. most of the cards are not worth the money.

I haven't had a watch party since Conor/Khabib. It's easier when a few people come over and shell out a few bucks each. No one cares anymore. Feels like the casuals have been completely weeded out the last 5 years and a hardcore fan like myself has become a casual. I buy maybe 1-2 cards a year

The paywall behind a paywall thing really pisses me off, on principle more than cost.

I have the Disney bundle, so I have ESPN+, but i really only buy the most major of events now (Alex v Izzy, Jones v anyone, etc).

I think it's a bit ridiculous that you have to pay $12/mo or whatever for the privilege of buying an $80 PPV, most of which aren't half as valuable as they were when they were half that price.

I used to buy most of them when you could just buy a PPV. Making me subscribe to a woke ass network just for the privilege of paying too much for shitty cards is when I stopped. I'd still buy an occasional PPV if it didn't require ESPN+. Fuck ESPN.

Once they became easier to stream for free.
That said, it’s usually a big dinner party with a bunch of couples, so we’ll just buy the PPV.

This certainly is a unique corner of the interwebs. While the large majority of the internet is busy trying to make people beleive they are rich and happy, this place is full of people very proud to brag about being poor and how they find the very topic of the forum to be of such poor quality and boring that it doesn't interest them or provide enough value for them to be a customer. On top of that constantly rant about how they believe the athletes should be paid more but certainly not worth a dime of their money. The world never ceases to amaze.

When I found torrents back in the day and livestreams in the current era

Streaming is so easy these days. I literally never even spent any time trying to stream any sports and it's all over. Not sure how the ppv model even works these days
