News When did PPV's become not worth the money for you?

back in the day 2004/2005 my uncle worked for direct tv. they had the access cards in the receiver they installed inside your house. he gave me an access card with unlimited funds. pornos, PPV, anything available you just selected it hit enter and it went thru. direct tv caught on then put money limits on cards. my uncle would then give me a card loaded with the max limit $999.99 everytime i used up all the funds id go have him charge it for me. around 2010 they went full digital and did away with the cards completely. i then started streaming. i have never paid a dime to watch a UFC PPV. prob seen around 85-90% of every UFC PPV ever.

If you have the patience…

-following along via sherdog updates
-watching gifs from @KazDibiase
-watching for free the next day on mma-core
-following up on matches to make by @GibsterMMA and @Siver!

Is not a bad option!

I love my sherbros if you can’t tell

Much love my brother!

By the way, those are all really good options, the PBP is awesome if I'm ever out of town, and Kaz Dibiase always provides the (often brutal) clarification.

Gibster is a legend.

I pirate every UFC PPV, not only is $80/PPV super exorbitant but also you need to commit to an ESPN+ subscription ($110/yr) to even have the privilege of forking over those $80

I don't pirate ONE FC cause I can watch it legally through my Amazon Prime

I'd pay for Rizin at $25/card but the only issue is I don't know the fighters, and it's often in Japanese time zone hours that don't work for me in the US

They were not worth the money before ESPN+, but i still bought a few stacked PPV's when they were still on CableTV. I have not bought a single PPV on ESPN+ and i never will. When they dropped CableTV PPV's their excuse was the Cable companies were getting too much of a cut. Now whats their excuse? I don't feel one bit of remorse for free streaming, and i never will. I actually find joy in helping someone else find a free stream.

Years ago. I bought every card from about 2005-2013, then just the big ones from 2013-2017.

The last card i bought and will ever buy was Jones vs Gus ll or Usman vs Colby, whichever came last.

In protest to the company poor ethics?

I just wait a couple of weeks and watch it on ESPN+. The last time I bought a PPV was Islam vs. Volk 1.

I buy every month. Can't bother messing with streams. I'll pay to avoid the hassle.

Who knows if they need to leave the PPV model instead, doing great in streaming might still lead to better buy numbers over time, sponsors paying better cause people is still watching despite not paying for it, the UFC is plastered with ads on the cage.

UFC 9. Shamrock vs Severn snooze fest. Last time we pitched in for a UFC, after that it was pre-chug and straight to the bar.

Its been not worth it for a while now for me. I haven't watched one in over a year, just keep up with the results and watch the highlights. Catch a fight night here and there

Day 1. Not interested in paying for something unpredictable and a one time experience. Now if they gave you a copy of show, that might be worth it.

I’ll pay for PPVs when they are included with Fight Pass and a sensible monthly fee. $70 a pop? $70 for all of them maybe…

When Nuggets came up.

It drastically slowed down my view rate to only watching favorite fighters to rarely watching shows.

When it stopped being $50 or there abouts. 10 of us would pitch in together for it.

Partially, for sure. But it’s also personal.

Cards these days don’t have the value for me to pull the trigger for several reasons:

1. Too saturated and rarely more than a few fights i’m interested in.

2. There are as many fight nights i skip as i watch. Maybe it’s a natural byproduct of having so many cards and a giant roster but, regardless, it’s harder for me to see prospects because they often aren’t integrated into what i perceive as “big” cards like they used to be. I certainly could be more vigilant with watching all fights on DWCS, etc but sometimes it’s a chore.

3. Price. I’m not paying $80 for any card tbh, but they aren’t even close with what they present 99% of the time anyway.

4. Meritocracy. It never existed, but we distance ourselves further from it every year, seemingly. Undeserved title shots and favorable matchmaking out the wazoo, so yes, that’s a big part as well. To an extent, this has always been present (see Lesnar 15 years ago), but it spread like wildfire.

5. I’m older. The shitty integration of social media with what’s said on twitter, tik tok, etc, coupled with the newer crop of self-serving posters who dominate this board for likes-gotchas-ackshuallys, and i’ve found my interest waning here as well.

Having said that, i probably would have purchased Jones/Ngannou, but alas, we never got it.

Can agree with pretty much all of that.

Also - fuck! Lesnar was 15 years. Holy shit time flys. Feels like Fedor’s Affliction card were yesterday. :(

It was never worth to begin with, anybody that pays over $60 for a sport event is throwing their money away and is getting conned lol.
