What's Your Next Purchase? V5

I need a decent IFAK or easy to travel FAK with gloves, scissors, quick clot, gauze, and such things. I fully intend on getting one that fits into MOLLE webbing eventually so if there's a decent sized one that comes with everything that'd be awesome.

I ALSO need a decent hunting pack that I can use to pack a carcass out with but also carry some things. Have my two knives picked out, just need to get them at some point and I think I can get them locally but I know NOTHING about what to look for in a hunting pack.

I have a nice Oakley tactical/ski bag but it's rather small and no way a deer quarter could fit in it.. I have a older Scott Optics one I used to use while skiing that could probably take a single deer quarter but there's no way a second could fit and I hate the way it zips close at the top.

Open to suggestions on both from people.

For those wondering, my two knife choices.

For the big stuff like separating the skin and scoring the legs to break them off below the joint and shit:

How much are you looking to spend on a hunting pack. Are you packing in for a few days? Or just day hunting? How big are the deer you plan to shoot? What's the terrain like?

Packs are interesting, there's actuall some good stuff out there for ~ 150 bucks and the. Things go up close to a thousand dollars. The kifaru I just got ran me close to 800 bucks with the options I scored but I've used a mystery ranch Marshall pack in Alaska and it was awesome, another one to look at for a heavy duty pack is the outdoorsmans from packs, they are sweet and pretty modular.

For packing meat on tough terrain, I really like a frame pack rather than a tube pack or an internal frame pack, remember if you head out with 30-40lb of gear then get 80lb of meat, you need something that can really get the weight off the shoulders and onto the hips.

I'll just throw it out there in case you havnt thought about it yet but when hauling those heavy loads on tough terrain, boots and hiking poles are things you'll need.

Just saw the outdoorsmans long range hunter is around 500 bucks which puts it right there with the mystery ranch marahall.

The outdoorsman frames are pretty cool, should be able to carry as much meat as you could possibly carry.

I've hauled moose out (multiple trips of course) with a cabelas Alaskan frame and bungee straps, it worked fine but no frills that's for sure.

If I remember right you are hunting blacktails right? If so, you'll be dealing with 50-100lbs of meat, less if you hunt coues deer.

Even on a day hunt you could easily end up 10 miles or more from the truck with a quartered out animal, in also guessing you are are sort of planning a DIY public land hunt rather than a guided private land thing so you'll really want to invest in a solid pack that will be good long term. You'll get a deer, then want another, then want a coues deer, then an elk, pronghorn, eventually exotics and then you'll fall down the dark alley of sheep hunting and big country will be your thing.

Get a solid pack, don't cut corners. For the southwest lots of guys seem to think the outdoorsman pack is the way to go, kifaru if you hunt really rough country. That outdoorsman long range hunter with that smaller lumbar pack type thing as an extra would have you set for everything.

You can use that benchmade for all the fine work on an animal as well. Breh hacking are cool but dull faaaast on thick skinned game, lots guys like them and they are cheap enough that it dosent matter (40 bucks) but I've found they work ok when the conditions are perfect but cutting hair seems to steal the edge.

In shit conditions, like rain, wet fur, etc, I wasn't overly impressed with the performance and just went back to a normal hunting knife (that same benchmade in my case). I've sort started carrying a fillet knofe type thing in addition to a hunting knife and that works great.

You should also check out kestrel knives they make an awesome ultralight skinner.

It'd be day hunting in the PNW. Near Maple Falls. So hilly, but not mountains necessarily.

I have boot and old ski poles I could use

I'd get that outdoorsman frame with the mulley bag. That would give you the capacity to haul out anything you could shoot while carrying all your shot for the day.

Remember, big packs can go small, but small packs can't go big and you aren't going to haul 75lbs of meat on some shitty day pack, you'll need a way to load it up and get t out.

Those pack frames are cool too awesome shelf built in and a notch to aim your rifle from.

I just watched the vid they did on them. Looks like an awesome system.

Especially considering just 25 miles inland from where I live where we intend to hunt you can hit blacktail, black bear, elk, and apparently ONCE in awhile caribou though we can't legally hunt caribou here.

Oh yeah, and these dicks:


Yeah, I intend to carry a pistol with me and not for the fucking bears either.

Caribou in Nevada??? Damn. That would be super unexpected to see while out for blacktails lol. There's a tv show called meateater, it's a solid hunting show, i think the guy uses outdoors and packs. They really are badass and probably like 90% of the performance of a kifaru for 60% the price.

Man I always carry a handgun when I'm in the woods. In Alaska it's a 454 casull, down in New Mexico it's a glock 19, more worried about 2 legged predators. In the middle, it might be my ruger sp101 in 357 or my ruger kodiak 44mag.

Oh yeah, my dad has 40 acres outside Elko but I can't afford an out of state license there. Not right now at least


Our plan right now is to build a permanent living building there to see if we can connive our way to residence status.

Just ordered a Swarovski z3 3-9x36 from swfa.

I'm going to put it on a kimber Montana 308 with talley light weight low rings, should be 6.5lbs total.

That will be the replacement for the Remington 700bdl that got destroyed. Also sent off an email to weatherby about getting a bell and Carlson stock for my 375hh, they keep them in stock and sell them on the upgraded model. The barrel is a different contour than anything b&c offers standard.

Planning to ditch the vanguard stock for the b&c and put a leupold vx3 1.5-5x20 on it.

I've been super impressed with that vanguard synthetic 375, I wish I'd just spent the extra 500 dollars and got the upgraded version with the b&c stock, necg rear sight and Williams front sight. But whatever. It's nice to have the iron sights but they are just back ups so no need to spend too much on better ones.
 
Also looking for a light weight tent/stove set up, kifaru looks like the go to for these.
