What's the point of a calzone?

I recently went to an Italian restaurant owned by a woman from Italy and thought I'd have a calzone since it's been years since I had one.

I asked if they can make one and the lady said it's just a matter of folding the pizza. It was good but I'm thinking a pizza would've been better. It's basically a pizza but not as good. Having the topping cooked inside the dough makes it inherenly not as good as it's gooey and stays too hot to eat for awhile. The other stuff was good and it was a legit Italian place though.

Why did Italians make calzones when they have the superior pizza?

i don't have much calzone experience but i agree with this. need to taste the cheese and toppings directly, otherwise you're biting into mostly dough and the good stuff inside becomes blended in less delicious.

if you disagree, try putting all the ingredients of a pizza in a blender then baking it. it's not the same taste.

Because its easy to pick up and move with. Sometimes someone doesnt want an entire pizza and theyre not gonna pay full pizza price for something smaller.
So a calzone is basically half a pizza. Its always cheaper and you can eat and walk instead of being some jackass with a giant pizza box walking around.

Or they could just buy a calzone and taste it for themselves

This was my conclusion. The only advantage to a calzone is that it's easier to transport. But if you're going to sit down and enjoy your food, you're going with a pizza. The way the cheese and toppings get cooked when it's exposed to the oven fire makes it way better.

It's basically a street food, like tacos. Something that can be quick and on the go.
The real question should be calzone vs stromboli.

Calzone is the sandwich version of pizza. It has its place.

I forgot calzones existed,v ery forgettable food imho. The “pizza roll” is a superior product, just dip it in marinara and there is virtually zero downside.

I like traditional calzones because they have ricotta cheese and I love ricotta cheese.

That is all.
Yes this. I was confused reading the first page and everyone saying it’s the same as a pizza. And I love calzone for this reason as well

You went to a place that doesn't know how to make calzones and now you're wondering why they exist?

Calzones are great, find a better place though.

Calzones are fantastic, when done well. The best calzone I have ever had might even be better than the best pizza. There was a place that made it with a nice, thick, crust. They put the sauce on the side, so the crust could soak up all the meat and cheese oils, and then you could dip the calzone in the sauce. The sauce was spiced very well. I still miss that place, but it is long gone, even if I did live near there still.

There are many different styles of calzone I have enjoyed over the years, but I don't remember ever running into a bad one. If the ones you are eating suck, it is because the restaurant you are at sucks.

Pfft, you're a pizza noob.
