5 years ago it was all about the leg kick (kick to the thigh) the past year or so everyone has been kicking calf/ankle area. People started getting wise to the thigh kick by talking to thai boxing coaches and going hard with the straight right.

What is the counter to the low kick? Maybe the return of spinning shit?!

Lifting the leg up off the ground?

Dogs (male) have known this for thousands of years.

I bet someone is going to shatter the mold entirely, and instead of targeting the leg, will actually throw a kick at their opponent's head.

You know it's going to happen eventually.

Check it, then send your own kick to the body is a pretty good counter to a low kick.

Lifting your leg or turning your shin outward towards the kick can cause significant damage..proof of this can be seen in with RDA vs Lawler..lawler was getting hit with this kick quite abit but then started turning his shin out..if you look closely at RDA foot and shin in the later rounds theres some swelling and discoloration..its a risky kick for both receiver and thrower.. just good timing on blocks and lifting your leg should pretty much negate this attack..

Checking might have something to do with it.

I think nutkicking is the wave of the future.

The calf one is tricky, feel like it's that much harder to detect because it's another foot lower than a traditional leg kick. Checking it isn't going to help as much as checking a thigh kick where the shin is much thicker and closer to the knee. Stepping over it or pulling your leg back and avoiding it seem like the best options. Just another weapon in the MMA arsenal

You should be in another forum, sherdog isn't for you

I would suggest trying to block it with the bottom part of your knee, but it seems difficult to get your leg on a lower level. Maybe keep back leg heavy and look to counter this kick. You could try and feint all day, to find out when an opponent throws this. Like people do to Machida and McGregor.
