Opinion What's the consensus on Ben Shapiro around here?

Ok.

Shouldn't be hard for you to take it apart, then.

I pointed out a few problems with it already In this thread. I don't care about Shapiro enough to do an in depth dissection. And honestly, it's not worth the time. The author starts the article by laughing at the idea of conservative intelectual. He states his bias from the start.

Is the author biased in assuming the idea is laughable or are you biased in assuming it isn't? Both are possible, and you need to actually look at the real world to find out.

He is intelligent. He's not a top intellectual or thinker but he is a smart guy. I don't want to compare Shapiro to Socrates but you could say Socrates did the same. Except Socrates wasn't pushing dogma. Shapiro excels at rhetoric. Hitler made the point that the spoken word is much more powerful than the written. Socrates thought that too. lol.
Hitler was able to move from blinded veteran to Fuhrer in 15 years. Shapiro is good at picking fights at colleges and twitter. Not the same level of rhetoric or intelligence at all.

Are we really doing this? Yes, there are conservative intellectuals.

We're really noting that a position can't be ruled out because of bias unless it is false. We're not assuming that there must be someone to fill a certain category. And anyway, here's the paragraph you're referring to:

t’s easy to laugh, as some of us do, at the phrase “conservative intellectual.” When the most prominent public spokesmen for the right’s ideas include Milo Yiannopoulos, Charles Murray, and Dinesh D’Souza, one might conclude that the movement does not have anything serious to offer beyond “Feminism is cancer,” “Black people are dumb,” and “Democrats are Nazis.” (Those are, as I understand it, the central intellectual contributions of Yiannopoulos, Murray, and D’Souza, respectively.)

So first of all, he's not assuming that it's impossible; just saying that it appears hard to believe given the public face of the movement. You're assuming that it is possible, which appears to be more likely to be a biased position. I'd say that there are certainly many serious right-leaning intellectuals, but they don't appear connected to the political movement on the right.

I really don't want to play this game. If somehow it's biased to think there are consevative intellectuals, so be it.

"I don't want to play this game" = "I don't want to play a clarification game if it means I have to relent on my emotive position"

while i do love when he takes down moronic college sjw students...

some of his other views are too far right for me

What clarification is needed? And why is my position emotive? I probably lean more to the left than Jack.

Here's my thing with that.... college is where you are forming your social identity. Of course the college students are dumb. Most are ridiculous af. Shapiro walking in there and slapping them around, then his drones touting it as some huge victory is absolutely absurd. I might as well go wrestle some 7th graders and tout myself as the next Brock Lesnar.

Intellectual debate and social normative argumentation is incredibly difficult. Shapiro is a C+ student at best in that regard... but an A+ in rhetoric lobbing and using a bully pulpit (which is why he gets a C range in actual debate overall).

I'll never say he's not an intelligent person, because he is by most standards. He is also woefully overestimated by his followers.

i guess i find much of the current college stuff being done (occupy wall st ...blm etc) and much of the insane protesting and predatory attacks on speakers to show how far in a downward spiral college is atm
while i found the video amusing i agree ben could have used more tact... but that girl needed a wake up call

many of them do... we need people calling people out on their bullshit or we will be overrun with people like smugglypuff and company

I hear ya and I don't disagree that person was... silly. But here's what I did when teaching Medical Ethics and Meta-Ethics at University as a student-teacher... someone comes with the madness like that. You calmly explain to them the position that negates their conclusion and/or particular premises. They will continue to lob their rhetoric, and you simply point back to your points that prove your conclusion or negate theirs. You don't utilize strawman. You don't utilize reductio ad absurdum. You don't debase their broad position or their specific premise-conclusion errors.

I don't know how many times I had a crazy sjw or absurd bible-thumper in my classes. Demeaning them never helps. Scoffing at them never helps. Even if they say prayer saves more lives than penicillin. Even if they say the earth is flat before the President was born in Kenya. Even if they say all men should be castrated because women are genetically superior, or that men stole all invention from womens' ideas. You stay the course of reason and negating their argument OR asserting your own.

Shapiro fails in this constantly. He pokes at people for cheap points. He scoffs consistently. He often rambles off into false equivalence, strawmans, hasty generalizations, and absurdums.

which is why i find ben shapiro amusing to watch a video here and there but do not share his opinion on many subject and or follow or support him in any meaningful way etc...

i would digress the shapiro is selling a product (himself) and videos like that one help him sell said "product"

WOW! 18 pages and no one has called the little fascist virgin what he is, and that is, a little fascist virgin? SAD.

And he thinks he's better than you for it too!

I guess he's married now. I always think of him as an autistic dork incapable of listening, and of course, the guy who is better than all of us because he was a virgin in law school. He's so pure. Get your purity in check, guys.

I'm sure he will keep picking on college freshmen with pink hair, and you guys will continue praising him for it.

I've enjoyed watching him on YT for years. He seems to understand that logic trumps the feels, and it's glorious to watch him shut down snowflakes

Judging by your reply you might want to go back to college yourself.

I'm a big fan of Shapiro, but as I stated earlier, his position on transgenderism is too extreme and simplified for me...

I know many of my conservative brethren will disagree on this, but the transgender issue requires further examination rather than dismissing it as gender dysmorphia
