A lot of people seem to be considering Reyes vs Jones as the biggest robbery of 2020.
I had never seen that fight, so I gave it a look. And I don't see how this can be so widely considered to be a "robbery".
Round 1 has to go to Reyes for putting more pressure, briefly dropping Jones (with a punch to the chest, so that clearly wasn't a knockdown) and landing the cleaner shots, although Jones was picking up the pace during the last minute of the round, and was the one moving forward. Pretty clear that the first round goes to Reyes, although it's still a close one. 10-9 Reyes,
Round 2, Reyes put some good pressure on Jones for the first minute and a half, but 2 minutes into the round, Jones is the one moving forward pressuring Reyes, successfully attacking Reyes' lead leg, dodging Reyes' counters, which is getting Reyes tired, and winning the round, although Reyes lands one clean punch and a big leg kick in the last 30 secs. Jones' round IMO. 10-9 Jones.
Round 3 starts off with back and forth pressure from both men respectively, with nothing significant or noteworthy landing from either guy. But midway through, Reyes looks faded and Jones is the one moving forward, still chewing up Reyes' leg, but eating a few good counters, which don't have all that much snap. Reyes lands a few good body shots, while Jones appears unaffected and ends the round as he is pressuring a tired Reyes. Tough one to score, but I'm tempted to say it belongs to Jones, based mostly on pressure, and effective leg attacks. Reyes landed the cleaner punches, but not a significant volume of them enough to outweigh Jones' constant pressure for most of the round, the good leg attacks and being so obviously the fresher, more dynamic fighter. 10-9 Jones.
Round 4 easily goes to Jones. Besides a few good moments early in the round, Reyes is on his back foot the whole time, Jones gets the better of the grappling exchanges and gets some fine clinch work, lands more leg kicks and ends the round walking down Reyes and landing some clean punches. 10-9 Jones.
Round 5. Reyes is gassed. Jones lands a takedown, Reyes immediately gets back up, but Jones still took him down. Jones constantly pressures Reyes for the whole round and puts on a kicking clinic on him, battering both his body and his legs. Easy one to score in favour of Jones. 10-9 Jones,
So that's 49-46 in favour of Jones, with round 3 being somewhat debatable, but even with that swing, Jones still wins.
I don't think this was a "robbery" at all. It's just a typical fight where neither guy actually looked to be in much trouble at any point, but again that's how most Jones fights unfold nowadays anyway.
I do have to say that, based on this fight and other recent performances, Jones is absolutely fucked at heavyweight. Seems like he can't hurt guys like he used to, whether it be with his punches or his kicks. I can't see him hurt guys like Stipe, Ngannou, Gane, Rozenstruik, Blaydes, etc. at this point. Maybe he can win decisions against them by out-running them and out-slicking them, but I can't see much offense from him being a turning point in any of these fights and him not relying on a point fighting strategy in order to be successful against such larger and stronger opponents.
