What will be the next "big thing" in MMA?

As for general approach, the GSP hybrid thing should be the standard by now but it's still ridiculously uncommon. Almost everyone we've seen good at it became champion. I blame trainers.

As for techniques, standing elbows seem to be happening more and will probably grow in popularity with Jiri around.
They would still have to train it. Some fighters may get influenced and try it on their own while others won't. Just pick other flashy and unorthodox fighters and see how many other fighters train those moves even though they see it's effectiveness. It'll be the same for Jiri. Just like when Anderson Silva was doing his thing other fighters weren't trying to do Anderson Silva moves for the most part. That also requires being able to train by just seeing techniques with no explantions/breakdowns in real time during fights. Not everyone can train/learn in that way because they would be basically teaching themselves.

A near clean sweep of dominant champions from Russia and neighbouring countries.

Honor, respect, & Pride make it to the forefront for some refreshing and jbg approved violence.

Natural evolution of the psychotic bad guys like Strickland. When they feel they are losing the match they will attack referee then their coaches will throw steel chair to their advantage when referee is down :p

Yeah the flashy stuff will stay rare. I'm talking just standing elbows in general, especially in the clinch or in close, which Jiri also does often. They have been underutilized forever but we're starting to see them more and more.

In a relatively new sport, there are always holes to exploit in order to top the competition.
Danaher and Gordon Ryan for instance exploited the weakness of the leglock game in BJJ. GSP outclassed his opponents by being the first real hybrid MMA fighter, who understood that MMA was a discipline in itself and not just an addition of Muay Thai, Wrestling and BJJ.
So whether it's strategies or techniques, there are always blind spots to exploit.
What holes do you see in nowadays MMA that are going to be exploited sooner or later?

I think front facing kicks to knees. That create space and potentially a lot of damage.

Otherwise it will be some technique that makes takedowns harder/punishes them. There are so many fighters like Khabib that try to wrestle to victory and if they can get you down there is little counter, so I expect something to pop up to help solve it because it is something fighters are actively working on. Alternately there might be a better takedown technique which breaks MMA and tips it too far in favor of wrestlers.

Tickling, its very effective and can have enormous effects. I think when guys are on the ground and also in the clinch against the fence we will see more tickles, especially tickling to the pits and belly area. Tickle tickle tickle :P :P

I just wish every fighter was aggressive...hate point fighting

That was Dean Lister.
Dunaher just took it to another level.

Spinning elbows are considered flashy, that's why not many train them even though it's a move that's been around basically forever in muay thai and has been done for decades already in mma. Same with all the other spinning attacks. Fighters just don't train them and/or trainers/coaches doesn't teach it. Even regular elbows is rare, most fighters just don't use elbows in fights at all.

Frank Shamrock was the first real hybrid fighter.

If only we knew.

Out of 10,000 fans I wonder how many would have said “calf kicks” 5 or 10 years ago. 2? 3?
I would say calf kicks as well, but i feel it is only effect against fighters who skip leg day.

Legit lold

Just wait until old man Brock juiced up on the new TRT wheel kicks Big Frank o_O

I think we are already starting to see it, but vicious front kicks to the body by fighters who don't mind being on their back.

Charles used this to great effect vs Poirier, and imo, should do this against Gaethje as these kicks really hurt and slow down people. It's a clear path to victory for him imo (if he keeps his hands up).
