What was a more impressive win, Islam dropping and submitting Charles or Ilia knocking out Holloway?

Chins are meant to be cracked. Ilia is one of the greatest finishers we have seen at 145. I thought Topuria had a good chance of finishing Max early on.

Although Islam vs Charles wasn't the purist of grappling exchanges cause he got tagged, I thought a submission was more improbable due to how Islam and Charles would have approached this fight.The fight with Pettis was a while ago and pettis was known for his submission game.

You can argue both sides. Charles was definitely in better form than Max (vs Ilia) when Islam fought him, at the time Charles was on one of the most impressive streaks in mma history. Fans were legit arguing that Charles was potentially the GOAT LW. Max meanwhile lost 3x to the guy Ilia knocked out, he has a good win against Gaethje but he was seen as a 145 “has been”, not the future of the division. The method of the finish was more impressive for Ilia, but the quality of the finish (in terms of strength of opponent) was more impressive for Islam.

Charles got finished plenty, wasn't syprise he folded / crumbled. Ilia only man to finish Max. Actually Dustin subed him. Besides that he never even got really knocked down let alone KOd.

Agreed. At the time Islam was still an unproven quantity having just beaten Bobby Green. Ilia on the other hand has won the title after KOing Volk and was widely expected to beat Max.

It's absolutely not hard to pick between the two at all. Max had never been dropped in a fight at FW ever. Charles had been dropped in 3 of his 3 previous fights.

Max has never been finished by strikes and has been fighting in the UFC for 25+ fights. Charles has been finished more than 7 times in the UFC. A few times by strikes, a few times by submission.

It's not even close finishing holloway via KO like that is a significantly more impressive win. Charles has been dropped, KO'd, and submitted several times before. Max has never been done like Illa did it, and we can't say he's washed or nothing because he looked amazing against gaethje and this fight was within months of that fight.

obviously Islam doing what he did to Charles given Oliviera was at the absolute peak of his career at such a point an absolute submission behemoth. and for Islam who never truly had a top fight by then to make short work of such a fighter is nothing short of incredible. it was extremely one-sided.

Max was already past his best by now, took a lot of damage by then and his chin was bound to break given he has not been known for his defence throughout his career and just was beaten by a better fresher fighter even if he looked good before succumbing to Ilia's power.
