my excuse is a late night post after a hard day of work. besides it proves my point moreYo he fought Barboza
That YELLOW looks good on ye, keed
This is the best breakdown I have seen so far. I think everyone agrees that Khabib PROBABLY would of been able to put up a good 5-8 more title defenses if he wanted to. People shit on him for not putting himself out there I guess. There do seem to be some people who pick apart his record or claim that he was a great “what if” because he left before he amassed the same number of title fights as a Silva or St.-Pierre.
But I think many people see it the way I view it. Yeah maybe he didn’t get the same number of accolades like successful defenses. Maybe he didn’t fight the lightweight contenders beyond the Gaethje/Poirier generation who *might* have posed more of a challenge. But I don’t think anyone who was paying attention is asking how great was Khabib really? The only question was how long would he remain that great. Because everyone slows down with age. Some guys remain really good till they’re 40 like Glover. Others hit a wall much earlier and then it’s bad loss after bad loss when they are matched up with younger contenders.
And I think there’s something to be said for the fact that Khabib left before any of that. Great for health/longevity and really adds to the mystique of his career. Sure it would have been cool to see him fights guys like Charles and Dariush, but there is no doubt in my mind that he was a phenomenal fighter.
People for some reason seem to downplay Gaethje and Poirier wins, but look how much of a beast Poirier has been over the years and look at what Gaethje just did to Fiziev, a guy touted as a next wave lightweight contender. Conor was a huge win at the time as well.
There seems to be a trend recently of some sort of idea that Khabib was overrated because he never fought anybody good or moved up in weight.
Never moved to 170:
Several greats never moved up in weight, DJ, Silva never won LHW belt. Jon Jones was considered the GOAT by many before his move to HW due to his domination. This is never discussed that they never moved up or won a belt above their weight class to bring down their legacy.
"But he was a weight bully, 170 would be his normal weight class anyway"
He may of been in the 190s or even 200s in his prime. But on fight night he was never more than 185. Which is about what Poirier and Tony Ferguson weight.
Didn't fight best opponents/clear division:
The biggest names he didn't fight during this time were Alvarez, Ferguson, Cerrone, Oliviera, Hooker, Lee, Dariush. Ferguson would've gotten wrestled. Alvarez would put up a good fight I think but lost the title shot when he lost to Poirier and then left. Cerrone was old, Oliviera only had 1 ranked win I believe and the rest weren't ranked high enough.
Maybe you don't consider him MMA GOAT but it is unquestionable he is top 5. Khabib had done enough and knew he could keep fighting and keep winning but wasn't in it for the money and didn't want to take unnecessary damage. To act like he ran from anybody is delusional.
Can this idea officially be declared debunked?
EDIT:
I understand this has been an argument since Khabib has been in the game but it seems like there have been a lot of forums open that are condeming his career achievements, a lot more than when he was in the game. I wonder why...
sweet little Boston you have in your picBut Jones, Silva and DJ all moved up, not a great argument
sweet little Boston you have in your pic
sorry guys back to the action
Khabib didn't move up in the UFC but he has 11 fights at 170 beforehand. He fought once a month basically not cutting weight. Even fought some guys who had 185 bouts. But Jones, Silva and DJ all moved up, not a great argument
sorry about that , dont know how you got in there. Fixed the link.Huh?
the fact that he has only 3 title defensesWhat do you mean "recently"?
People have been calling for Khabib's head ever since he walked away from the UFC unblemished as the most dominant fighter of all time, especially after he snuffed Dana's son.
The millions of Conor fans across the internet moved on from being a fan of Conor to trying to besmirch Khabib in GOAT discussions because he left them with no one to cheer for.

if cain velasquez retired early theres no doubt he would be like khabib todayTrue.
I have no qualms with anyone willing to make an argument against Khabib's achievements even though I'll still argue why I believe he's the best ever. He left the door wide open for that by retiring so young.
I can tell the difference between a hater and someone with a reasonable argument.
I know a lot about Khabib though. I look at variables outside of his faultless fighting career like his Sambo career, his coaching career, and the gym stories and footage I've seen. I believe he is every bit as good as they say he is and the best ever.
The guys he beats up in the gym all the time like Islam, Usman, Umar are taking over MMA, that tells me all I need to know.
if cain velasquez retired early theres no doubt he would be like khabib today
lol at 3 title defense
It's literally the LW record. No one has been able to break 3the fact that he has only 3 title defenses
makes him overated theres like 30 plus more guys who are ahead of khabib
