What is Uber?

If you live in New York, London, Toronto or any city where you can walk out the door and almost always get a taxi no matter where you are then you can get by without Uber.

If you travel a lot or in cities where taxi's are not immediately available and Uber is there it is a god send. You just open the APP and it locates where you are and a car is sent. Easy as that.

I would be more concerned about random unknown passengers than the Uber driver

Wouldn't it be funny if an Uber driver pulls out a gun on his passenger and was like "gimme your money"

And the passenger was also holding a gun and going "I'm gunna rob .... ohhhhhhhhhhh"

Driver: Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!

Passanger: AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!! OH YOU

Driver: WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Uber is nice because they handle all the payments. No money change hands between you and the driver which is great if you have your phone but you don't have your wallet. Tipping is optional and also anonymous. Overall I find Uber's cleaner and more convenient since they come to you and their routes show up on your phone.

I've used Lyft and Uber they're pretty nice especially when you're drunk. Promo codes can make them really cheap

I never understood why yellow cab didn't just create their own app.

I remember I was in San Fran, and my friend hailed an Uber while we watched 3 cabs roll by. I was told to wait because it will be worth it.

{<huh}

I have never taken an Uber in my life, I usually cycle, take the train or get a taxi if I need to get somewhere fast.

From my understanding, it is like tinder? For Taxis? ... You have a normal, average citizen that can give rides to other people for money?? Is this a thing??

Man, this whole concept just seems like a terrible idea and a dangerous one. What if the Uber driver is a criminal? Or a potential rapist? What if the customer is a lunatic?? There doesn't seem to be any kind of accountability.

I found this video ... Ugh, I'd rather have a job collecting trash from the side of the road.

I also wouldn't feel safe having a loved one of mine (a GF or my mother) take an Uber. The whole thing just seems dodgy.

Maybe not a great idea for a culture like the US where so many people are scared of their fellow human beings, but on the other hand it seems to be doing well in many communities there. In some places taxis seem to be a thing of the past since they continue to charge twice the price - sometimes more - as Uber. Uber provides no-cap insurance for the driver AND for the passenger if something should go wrong.

At least now there's a choice. I have an 80-year-old auntie who takes Uber all the time. I've taken it on occasion, and it's always been a good experience. But some people are wary, sure. If you would like to continue to pay exorbitant cab prices (at least they are in my city), go ahead. I'm glad people have a choice now.

By the way, when I lived in Russia I got around sometimes by hitchhiking right in the city - both the small city where I lived, and even Moscow when I visited from time to time. It's a casual grassroots system that a lot of people partake in, albeit mostly men understandably. I loved this, that people could just set something Uberesque up and make some money without any government or corporate interference. Wouldn't work in the US though I guess....too many nutjobs.

Starting to think I need to use taxis again. Uber is more expensive and my last one rolled up in like a 2008 Mercury Sable.

Also, I'd rather have my wife take an Uber than one of the old Mini cabs. At least there will be a record of her last movements and of the driver. In a mini cab/taxi there's none of that, hence people like this being able to get away with this shit for years..
............
Would've been caught after the first offence if he was an Uber driver.

It depends. Uber seems like it tries to get away with the least amount of work in any market. In western countries where some regulation is required, Uber will have to cover insurance, background checks and identity verification. But in undeveloped countries, theres non of that. There was a Uber rape case in India and Uber even tried to defame the victim by using her medical records against her.

You don't just make your own account and start picking people up. Uber does a background and driving record check before you can start driving. Passengers also have ratings and the cars have GPS.

Regular cab drivers are strangers too, so I'm not sure why you'd be fine with them and not uber drivers. The only difference is price and uber drivers use their own car.
I actually just made my own account and started picking people up.

I also have a buncha kidneys I need to unload if you're interested.

I can also give you a ride somewhere.

When I wait in line for a taxi at the mall, there's always a shit ton of people standing in another area with their smart phones calling for a Grab taxi (same as Uber). Thanks for staying out of my taxi queue, you technologically advanced people. But in certain areas of town, and times of day, where it's hard to catch a cab...there's definitely a benefit to their services.

As you hailed a cab driver rolls down window

Driver: "Saan kayo?"
Me:" Saan mo ba gusto?"

ha...i try my best in Bisayan, but they get freaked out when you don't know where you're going. There's a bar I hang out in in Cebu, Time Out, and it's almost impossible to get a taxi there headed away from Fuente....i had to jump on the back of a jeepney last time....grab app would work well there.

edit: i'm so old school, it's hard to even go smart phone and have an app for that. I'm still running the p800 Samsung version I had in 2010. No wonder my wife hates me...lol

Yes, but regular cab drivers are subject to a lot more regulation. Their dispatch knows where they are at all times as well. It’s not like there has never been an Uber driver that killed someone. Both are perfectly safe. But because there was never any legislation created that dealt with ride sharing, since that never existed before, ride share isn’t subject to as many regulations and therefore doesn’t have to pay as much to the government and can keep their prices lower.
