What Is The Reason For MMA Fighters' Obsession With Tattoos?

Tattoos = narcissist.

Hey everyone, look at me. I am cool. I have a "story" to tell.

Yawn.

It is more badass to sport what you were given by birth.

Look at most of the TUF cast now, tattoos, Mohawks and painted toe nails.

Hmm what went through my mind was that my daughter is an excellent artist and drew a beautiful drawing. Wasn't meant to be a tattoo, but I was proud of her drawing and it looked good so I went and got it. Now she's moved out and far away I think about her every time I look at it. It's not there for others to admire or for me to look all badass, it's there as a reminder of my only daughter and what a good artist she is.

You saying thats a new thing?

I'm saying its getting worse now.

On a side note, look at the top 3 p4p fighters in history. GSP, Anderson and Fedor, all with very little to no tattoos at all.

I actually understand what you're saying here, and I'm not gonna pile on like everyone else in this thread... but I think the reason people are on you is because you're saying people with tattoos are inherently more foolish or something along those lines. I don't know, I don't have any and really don't plan on getting any, but I know people with some (my ex girlfriend), and as far as people went, they had/have a good head on their shoulders.

Of course now it's 'trendy' to a degree, so I get how you can kind of see it as trashy, which in all fairness a lot of them are... but I'd still advise you to be more open minded. Jones and Cain have tattoos, and they are successful breadwinners and seem to be providing a financially stable lifestyle for their families. Just because someone may be rough around the edges doesn't necessarily mean their morality isn't there....

Idk... I've thought about this too. Not my thing, but some of the most honest people I've known have been tatted and a little 'damaged' in a way, but aren't we all? The young folks getting the absolutely stupid ones will get them removed in the next 10-15 years, I'd bet anything that tattoo removal will take off soon... so there's that too

Thank you for your classy response.

Do you like the movie "Rocky." Remember when Rocky says to Adrian that if they have a son he's not gonna turn out to be a bum. Rocky says: "He's not gonna have any tattoos." This movie won the Oscar for Best Picture. Sylvester Stallone wrote the screenplay. If a tough guy like Stallone can even recognize that tattoos are just low class and sleazy, why should anyone be surprised I feel the same way?

This next question is for the whole forum: Do you have any pictures of yourself from years ago and you wonder "what was I thinking when I wore that"?!?! It happens all the time. But unlike ugly clothes, you don't just unbutton or unzip a tattoo and put it away. So, what happens if on the day you go to get your tattoo, you have the same level of taste as when you wore those awful clothes in the picture you laugh at, or the picture of you with a mullet that you laugh at? What if those choices had been permanent? What if the mullet hairstyle had been permanent so you had to have your hair that way for the rest of your life? How about if you were stuck having to wear the wardrobe you chose when you were 18 years old for the rest of your life? I rest my case.

I don't believe former UFC Champions Royce Gracie, Dan Severn, Ken Shamrock, or Mark Coleman have tattoos either, At least I don't remember seeing tattoos on them when they were ruling The UFC.

Another fighter that I'm not sure has been mentioned yet but deseres to be mentioned on the list of great fighters who had very few or no tattoos is Mirko Cro Cop! When he was in PRIDE he was the man! "Right kick hospital. Left kick cemetery."

The only guy who I ever thought had cool tattoos was Alex emilianenko. I mean they were pretty shitty tattoos, but they had that effect of making you think "this guy is a bad muther#$@%. Most other tattoos seem to be of the variety that a douchey frat boy would have, making them not all that extreme.

I don't know but tattoos look disgusting most of the time.

Especially when the amount of ink covers the guy's whole arms or worse, when their whole body is inked. It looks so greasy and sleazy. They've just ruined themselves. Having too many tats for fighters is bad for another reason besides looks. Anywhere you have a dense amount of tattoos, you can't sweat. The ink blocks the sweat glands and as a result the risk of overheating rises dramatically. I learned about this when I recently saw a National Geographic type documentary on The Yakuza who are known for covering large amounts of their bodies with tattoos.

To the moderator who sent this to Wasteland:

Dear Sir,

Could you please inform me why threads such as this thread which I titled "What Is The Reason For MMA Fighters' Obsession With Tattoos" and threads in general designed to gain a better understanding of the culture of MMA fighters aren't considered to be worthy of being in the original section in which it was placed where most people read and instead are moved to Wasteland?

Do you have a problem with us wanting to learn more about the fighters' culture? If so, what are your reasons for preferring we don't attempt to use Sherdog to talk about the culture of MMA fighters?

I would very much appreciate a reply because the decision to have this thread removed from where I originally posted it is something that seems quite odd to me. I believe that when fight fans learn more about fighters than just their win-loss records and show interest in the entire culture of MMA fighters, only good things can come from that. It shows a genuine desire to become more informed about the fighters which then leads to a greater desire to see these athletes fight because we are thereby enabled to gain a better understanding of them in general which leads to a greater emotional investment in making sure we don't miss PPVs because we then genuinely care who wins. That genuine caring of who wins comes from feeling like we know more about them and therefore they don't seem like two random guys to us who are fighting in a situation where we have no real reason to care who wins or necessarily even buy the PPV at all.

Thank You,

Blackjack

Tattoos are signs of low self esteem and ppl with insecurities.

Why would a grown man/person needs to show off what they feel inside?

Getting tattoos = way too much free time
