Simply because his dad turned him in when he didn't have to, and he would live with that guilt forever. It would also deter other family members in similar situations in future from turning their relatives in if they did something like this. Life without parole would be appropriate though.

He was destined to be caught regardless. Mostly because he clearly wanted recognition. I don't know if he recognized this about himself when he planned or committed the murder, but it clear seems he couldn't stop himself from dropping hints and confessions all over after the fact.

The way this has played out feels like an extremely unhinged form of signaling. He killed Kirk to let everyone know what side he was on and just how committed he was. But if you do that and no one knows it was you, then what does it accomplish?

Depends on the type of violence. Here in the US, most people that are on death row are very low education but they're there for street crimes, killings over money, drugs, crimes of passion, etc.
