What’s the Most Valuable Asset in a Fighter ?

Chin, you can lack in any other area but you can composente with other assets or your style but not chin, it doesn't matter you are elite or gifterd in any other area, sooner or later you will be touched and if you have a glass jaw no other elite skill will save you.
I terms of natural assets there's a damn good argument to be made for this. It's pretty much impossible to stick around in the elite contender ranks without at least a solid chin. You don't necessarily have to be Mark Hunt but you damn sure can't be Jonathan Goulet. See Cody Garbrandt. The guy had it all in terms of talent and skill set. I mean, he dominated Dominic Cruz at Cruz's own game. But if he takes a clean shot from a guy with any semblance of power it's game over. That just doesn't give you enough margin of error to survive at the top.

none of those. its wrestling. as ben askren has already shown, you can get to the top with just that and nothing else. no chin, no striking, descent cardio, but.....phenominal wrestling. the most dominant one FC and bellator champion ever, fits the definition of a one dimensional fighter to a tee.

You can be a great wrestler but if you don’t have the cardio to actually wrestle then you’re not a good wrestler

Leon edwards doesn’t have a good chin, but he still made it to the top of the division.

Cardio out of those listed. Drive would be the best attribute. Where they're 110% in.

You can quite literally be the biggest, most technical, quickest, athletic guy on the roster but you’re not making it out of the 2nd round of a backyard brawl without a chin.

Wrestling is #1, power at HW probably as well

Power at HW? Interesting take. I tend to think most HW's have power. Some more than others of course. But imo of you have great speed or grappling at HW you're separating yourself more.

I guess I was thinking what 1 skill can carry you. We've seen Tuivasa become top 5 at HW lol. But yeah, grappling probably is better at HW.

Probably a cop-out answer but being “well-rounded” is always the best asset.

You need a chin, you need cardio, you need to hit hard, etc.

I rather be good in all 3 than be great in one and poor in another.

bank account or house i guess if they have one. or if they own a gym.

Elite grappling can make a very mediocre striker look like Tyson.

Garbrandt for sure had a suspect chin but that in combination with his low fight IQ made him go down in the rakings even faster.

I also think how Chuck and Frankie used to have iron chins but the moment they got cracked it was over for them, they didn't ajust their gameplan, the coming forward style doesn't work well with a weak chin.

one punch KO Power, Granite Chin, or Elite Cardio?

If you had to pick just one attribute for a fighter to have at a high level, which would it be and why?

One-punch knockout power can change a fight instantly, a granite chin lets you walk through hell and keep coming, and elite cardio can overwhelm and break opponents over time.
Quite a few guys have had all of those, fighter intelligence has overcome those attributes.

Cain and Hendo are few off top that fit that bill.

Yeah Leon's jaw might not be the strongest but I don't think it's glass, like Rochold or Weidman.

He also got the benefit of fighting guys like Brady, Belal and Colby which are guys not know for having a legit one punch KO power.

Yeah, being a hot head and willing to engage in a fire fight slug fest was Garbrandt's big downfall. He could've probably lasted a lot longer at the top of the had been more strategic in the cage. Which is weird because the Cruz fight was super high emotion going into it with their who gym/camp feud and that fight was an absolute master class. He would get on, so his work, and then get out and reset. But he never got hurt in that fight. If he gets rocked a bit that ego kicks in and he just has to try to get it back and that's when he gets KTFO being an idiot.

Chuck and Frankie really just kinda fell victim to Father Time and fight mileage. At some point you just lose a step or two and the chin starts to fade and that's all she wrote. Like most great fighters, they hung around a few too many fights at the end. Hindsight being 20/20 and all that, Frankie should've probably hung them up after the Korean Zombie fight and Chuck missed the perfect ride off into the sunset moment when he beat Wanderlei.

Yeah Cody is truly an enigma, following the logic he should have trashed TJ as well but the losses, age and injuries I think is prime is gone so I don't think he can make another, it was good while it lasted.

For sure, sooner or later was going to happen and some of those guys really struggle to realize when it´s over and are forced into retirement or cut, it's sad to see our heroes going out like that, Silva was particulary sad to see.
