Weili received her title shot three wins (one finish) into her UFC career when she was ranked #6. Two of those first three opponents no longer fight in the UFC and the other is currently ranked #9 (Tecia Torres)
That title shot took place in China, her home country, and was on relatively short notice for Jessica Andrade. Could the conditions have been any more favorable for the challenger?
Her first title defense ended up being an intense back and forth in which she ultimately prevailed so most fans forgot this was a fighter who had a very easy road to the top.
No one should be surprised that Rose, who has defeated every champion in the history of the SW division, with the exception of Carla Esparza was able to easily defeat a fighter who never truly earned their title shot to begin with.
Xiaonan Yan (#3) who is also from China and debuted nearly a year earlier than Weili should have been given that title shot if they needed a Chinese SW. She had more wins and fights in the UFC than Weili when that title fight took place. Since then Yan remains undefeated in the UFC and still has more wins and fights under the UFC banner than Weili.
Instead of fighting for the title next, on a six fight win streak (longest in the division), she is fighting Carla Esparza who she is ranked higher than. Perhaps Yan keeps getting pushed to the side because Weili, Carla, and Rose all have the same manager?
Looking forward to Yan methodically taking the title from Rose, if she ever gets the chance.
