I think it is anything under $1000 is a misdemeanor. Anything above is a felony which is way worse. Which is why a lot of credit card fraud is below that because banks will write it off and the police wont really go look that hard for the person.

A poor person that steals is usually going to do it violently, will have priors, and won't have money to hire a good lawyer, thus, they get more time than a Wallstreet banker that stole more

Because most businesses have insurance that protects them in case of robbery. In order for the insurance to pay out they need to be compliant with the robber.

Look up unarmed bank robbery.
Look up the difference between armed and unarmed robbery. (And yes every state has made the distinction between the two).
