Keaton = GOAT Batman

The thing that makes Batman so compelling - the mixture of deranged and damaged personalities - seems to be the thing that they struggle with most in the live action movies. The animated stuff tends to deal with it better, and that’s a reflection on the fact that the public wants explosions and set piece action, not psychological drama. That said, The Joker’s success might start to make the studios realise there’s a genuine appetite for that angle and not purely popcorn theatrics.

Let’s face it, the high watermark for the Nolan series was Batman & Joker in a cell together, talking, tormenting and goading each other. It’s also cheaper than all the stunts and set pieces, so Warner really needs to give more consideration to character study, as they did so successfully (financially, at least) with Phoenix.

I mean there have been some good Batman films down the years BUT IMHO there was always the feeling they were as much Burton or Nolan films as they were Batman films.

I think part of the problem DC have is that there trying to ape Marvel with characters that arent well suited for it, the likes of Cap, Stark, Thor etc are characters who do naturally fit into a grand fantasy action setting and family films whilst retaining some substance. Batman and attendant villains don't fit into this style nearly as well, it is as you say something that lends itself to small scale confrontations and alot of character focus.

Wow the goat returns, how about todd philips direct it instead? And bring in joaquin phoenix as an older joker as well.p even thought he is already dead in batman beyond.

This movie will do huge numbers and be one of the highest grossing rated R films it probably wont beat Joker revenue but it will be up there for sure. DC has found their niche do more gritty made for adults comic films, they cant compete with the pg marvel blockbusters, they should focus on more grown up oriented films.

All they need is Lobo next.

I don't have any issues with Burton's recent career, but Keaton is great in almost everything he does. You are on your own island if you think his recent career has been anything short of great.
Lol that's one way to put it. I'm not talking about his career so much as I no longer buy him for Batman. Especially having seen the NORM interview. I love that you love him, don't get me wrong. But I'm tired of the twenty year non reboot -- where tired, saggy versions of what we loved return to shit on their legacy. Even though advanced age would be built into the narrative, I would still have to deal with the focus and power pulled from Keaton to push whomever played Terry. That dynamic is not necessarily diminishing, but I don't think Keaton necessarily is the only man for this role either. To me nostalgia is not compelling enough. He had his time and yes it was a great time. But JOKER notwithstanding, could that nostalgia withstand a shoddy effort? Even he wants the EXACT same formula of Burton and Elfman, so he is aware of lightning in a bottle.

The rest of the 90's were good to decent for him I'd say but its been a pretty obvious decline since then into quite tame kookiness.

I spose you could argue it might be somewhat bound to the kind of films he's been making but I have my doubts that Batman Burton is suddenly going to reappear.

Well there's only one way to find out, right? :)

1.) "Burton directing" has always been his asking price for donning the Cape and Cowl again, and I doubt it's changed

2.) Good idea about phoenix.....except....the Joker died in the first movie with Keaton as Batman. Many of us remember that so there needs to be some kind of backstory that explains the presence of another Joker. Maybe Phoenix's "Joker" can be a copycat who admired the original and who is more cunning and deadly than Jack's "Joker"?

i'm in. keep DC away from it though sounds like they f'd up wonder woman 1984.

Im up for something like this, not sure if I like Tim Burton back though, but I think Keaton would kill it as the old Bruce, he really played a good villain as vulture.

Which isn't really the same as being R-rated or gritty, a hell of a lot of films are both of those whilst still being very simple childish entertainment. As mentioned I do think a lot of the best DC characters are naturally more suited to adult drama, something between the arthouse and the blockbuster without being bland Oscar bait which is a very under represented area in recent years.

Again I think there approach should really be looking for actors/directors who don't naturally fit into the family blockbuster market and offering them an outlet that's going to give them a decent budget and some attention.

Go older.

Clint Eastwood as Bruce Wayne.

Dick VanDyke as The Joker.
Had to Google to make sure Dick Van Dyke was still alive. :o 93 years old and still kicking.

Anyways, I'd love a new Keaton Batman.

I remember when they first did Batman Beyond my cousin as telling me how good it was and I had tell him to go watch the Batman animated series cause its better. I was impressed by Batman Beyond though it was good.

Imagine Old Man Bruce coming across the tattered remains of a Nicholson Joker wanted poster as slow dark version of the waltz theme plays

To me, he seems fit for this project on that basis. The Batman/Bruce Wayne from Batman Beyond is an older version of the character who is retired and training an understudy.
