The thing that makes Batman so compelling - the mixture of deranged and damaged personalities - seems to be the thing that they struggle with most in the live action movies. The animated stuff tends to deal with it better, and that’s a reflection on the fact that the public wants explosions and set piece action, not psychological drama. That said, The Joker’s success might start to make the studios realise there’s a genuine appetite for that angle and not purely popcorn theatrics.
Let’s face it, the high watermark for the Nolan series was Batman & Joker in a cell together, talking, tormenting and goading each other. It’s also cheaper than all the stunts and set pieces, so Warner really needs to give more consideration to character study, as they did so successfully (financially, at least) with Phoenix.
How about Todd Philips who directed The Joker?Keaton? yes
Burton and Elfman? no
Lol that's one way to put it. I'm not talking about his career so much as I no longer buy him for Batman. Especially having seen the NORM interview. I love that you love him, don't get me wrong. But I'm tired of the twenty year non reboot -- where tired, saggy versions of what we loved return to shit on their legacy. Even though advanced age would be built into the narrative, I would still have to deal with the focus and power pulled from Keaton to push whomever played Terry. That dynamic is not necessarily diminishing, but I don't think Keaton necessarily is the only man for this role either. To me nostalgia is not compelling enough. He had his time and yes it was a great time. But JOKER notwithstanding, could that nostalgia withstand a shoddy effort? Even he wants the EXACT same formula of Burton and Elfman, so he is aware of lightning in a bottle.I don't have any issues with Burton's recent career, but Keaton is great in almost everything he does. You are on your own island if you think his recent career has been anything short of great.
The rest of the 90's were good to decent for him I'd say but its been a pretty obvious decline since then into quite tame kookiness.
I spose you could argue it might be somewhat bound to the kind of films he's been making but I have my doubts that Batman Burton is suddenly going to reappear.
Wow the goat returns, how about todd philips direct it instead? And bring in joaquin phoenix as an older joker as well.p even thought he is already dead in batman beyond.
This movie will do huge numbers and be one of the highest grossing rated R films it probably wont beat Joker revenue but it will be up there for sure. DC has found their niche do more gritty made for adults comic films, they cant compete with the pg marvel blockbusters, they should focus on more grown up oriented films.
All they need is Lobo next.

It’s weird that he kind of disappeared for like 20 yearsYeah, any movie's stock is higher for having Michael Keaton in it. He improves everything he is in.

Had to Google to make sure Dick Van Dyke was still alive.Go older.
Clint Eastwood as Bruce Wayne.
Dick VanDyke as The Joker.
Did you ever see the Batman Beyond cartoon at all?
To me, he seems fit for this project on that basis. The Batman/Bruce Wayne from Batman Beyond is an older version of the character who is retired and training an understudy.Lol that's one way to put it. He was blackballed because he refused to do the "Batman Forever" film (due to creative differences). It’s weird that he kind of disappeared for like 20 years
