Was supposed to be promoted but wasn't

Lol, I was a straight up white belt for five years. I didn't even get a stripe, my instructor finally told me I needed to get my blue belt. I tested and got it. I laugh at all these dudes that are worried about their stripe.

I prefer no stripes. I know a lot of teachers don't even give them out after white.

I was recently told by one of my instructors that she somehow missed her belt promotion to BB....................... she then told me she had to wait a whole year before being promoted to black.

Just some perspective.

Enjoy the surprise on other beginners' faces when you roll.

Jyeah! lol :icon_lol:

Like when new guys come into the Jiujitsu academy with a fresh new white belt... but they dont tell you about the 10 years of competitive wrestling or 8 years of Judo or whatever they did. I would much rather be underestimated.

Same here, our instructor uses stripes for white belts because so many come and go that it's hard otherwise to keep track of them. Blue and up is alot easier. Usually only the white belts at our school care about stripes anyways. Also most of the guys prefer not to tip their hand at tournies.

I'd call him on it. That's bs, you earned that white belt stripe. Tell him that if he doesn't give you your stripe you are going to a different gym. Make sure you do it in front of the whole class.

I would try to do it while his instructor's instructor was there as well so that he can see what a crappy operation his student is running.

Is that where we are fellas? Really?

We cry because we get our piece of tape 2 weeks late? BJJ is losing its' prestigous....seriously.

I think you need to stop complaining about the complainers, and start a radical reactionary BJJ spin off.

yeah, I had a guy come to my gym. He did Judo for 8 or so year. 6 in school, and 2 in the Army. I rolled with him, and as i do with newbs, I was going easy cheesy. Next thing I know, we're going comp level. It was madness! Guy was super hard to keep on the ground too. I'd take him down, and he'd be trying to pop up the whole time. Was pretty nuts. Friggin sandbagger.

Then again I was a WB for a good 4 years or so myself.

i've seen blue belts do the same. complain someone got a stripe and they didn't. it's okay if you felt that desire for recognition or a symbol of progress. most of us are not immune to that desire for validation.

but, just keep training. saying something will make you look like "that guy". don't be "that guy". you're a white belt. pay your dues. train. and learn.

did you get your stripe yet? another day without that stripe... you need to confront your professor and then post the results on sherdog for others to learn from your experience...

I reminded my instructor about my first stripe, but only because the first stripe is given after the initial 15 classes and is required in order to spar, so I didn't want any of the instructors to prevent me from sparring because they didn't see any stripes. The rest of the stripes are not tied to any set attendance number and are left to the instructors' discretion. I am a white belt and therefore I do care about stripes, but I probably would not remind instructors about any subsequent stripes after the first one.

ive always looked at it this way. when my instructor feels im worthy of a promotion, he will award it to me. then ill have earned it and take much more satisfaction out of it.

as many others have said here, disregard your rank and just train.

I would give him a couple more classes and then just put a stripe on your belt yourself. He won't mind.

I am more concerned with what I am going to have for dinner this evening than the timely acquisition of stripes. If you are not a tiger, then do not worry about your stripes. :)

A week before belt promotions last month, I told my instructor that I wasn't able to make belt promotions because I would be out of town for work. He told me that I would get a stripe when I returned. A few days before I left, he told me a second time that he would give me a stripe when I came back.

Now, since there were no classes for 2 weeks after belt promotions due to the holidays, I didn't see him for over half a month. Class resumed this week and I was secretly hoping he would've given me one but made no mention. Obviously, giving a white belt his first stripe is the least of what's on his mind.

It's not the biggest deal in the world, I know stripes don't mean anything and etc but it was something I debated bringing up to him, but it's awkward to bring up. It would suck to wait another six months to go by and get my first white belt stripe then and not my 2nd, all because I was afraid to remind him.

What would you do?

Don't worry about stripes or promotions, just train!

I was suppose to get my blue 7 months ago, but due to a hangover I didn't make it to promotion/class, but I still show up to class and train. It never crosses my mind to ask my instructor why. I can honestly care less.
