Was it a rules experimentation when Mark Coleman got head kicked by a shoe wearing dude?

Absolutely insane watching the impact of Mirko's savage head kick on Mark.

Hunt is one of the very few that absorbed that CroCop shot landing clean & not being knocked out. What a incredible chin Mark had !
Same fight as well he takes a massive axe kick.

I always thought Pete was going for a body kick on a gassed out Coleman, but Mark leaned into it perfectly.

I believe that was the first headkick KO in UFC history. Pete Williams, fighting out of Shamrock's Lions Den, finished Coleman after wearing him down. Coleman was considered almost unbeatable at the time, so it was a real shock when it happened! AHHH, the good old days!

There were no unified rules at the time, so it was dependent on where the event was taking place.
This. I can tell many weren't watching then. This was around the time the UFC went dark. They had different rules at different events. The unified rules actually started in New Jersey a bit before Zuffa and Dana, which they always try to do a history revision on.

The first UFCs only allowed fighters to wear shoes if they weren't going to kick. Both Kenny Shamrock and Dan Severn took the opportunity to not kick and instead wear shoes to get a better grip on the floor

However, there is proof of shoe wearing guys later on that kicked ...

How long did the UFC allow fighters to kick in shoes? Was it banned the same time as gloves became mandatory?
You mean Pete Williams?

It might've given more traction than a sweaty foot on the floor.
That's true but wouldn't that also be true for a punch or a takedown attempt?

Like, the other week I tried to slide closed a kitchen window in my socks and couldn't do it. I put shoes on and was able to close the window easily.

It is a bit hard to know for sure, Coleman is leaning down a bit before Williams throws the kick so Pete could have seen that.

Completely different thing than fighters who have conditioned their shins to cave dudes skulls in. Also wasn't against the rules at the event, things were just all over the place for a good while as far as rules were concerned. Severn and Shamrock weren't allowed to punch each other with a closed fist per the rules of their rematch, if they did they would receive a fine.
You won't always hit with the shin.and the shin has the most spread force. It is not the most lethal.

Pride had a lot of shoes

- harder to escape leg logs

+ you're wearing shoes

They were really testing how much brain damage one can deliver with shoes, and here's the result

One of my top MMA memories, I remember my brother bought this event on DVD from Best buy and it came in a metal casing that looked like the championship title

Hammer house had a fight style that's basically semi controlled retard strength, I wonder who would have won (at the time of the Grand Prix) between Coleman and kerr.

Rewatching some of these older fights in high definition really shows the violence.

Videos of mark hunt tanking multiple head kicks in slow motion will probably be used in a MMA related CTE advert at some point.

Lol Ken brought him as a coach on tuf 3..
I forgot about that! Ken was the most fuck awful coach the show will have hahaha

Oh? Pray tell which part of my leg I'm supposed to be wrapping around someone's jaw on a headkick? My ankle? Or am I aiming to break my toes?

I had Fight Pass for a few months and it was worth it only to watch all of the old PRIDE events in HD. I'm actually very appreciative they managed to upscale the resolutions of all of those legendary fights.
