Was Frank Mir right about flyweights?

Because its like watching middle schoolers fight in most people's eyes.

I think 155 is about as small as the average meat head can muster to watch and even that might be a stretch.

If you watch a fight at a bar, watch what other people are doing , if 170 or higher isn't on most people aren't paying attention

And yet Mayweather and Canelo got the entire country to watch and both are under 155.

What does that say about MMA fans? There are too many MMA fans who are fans of fighting and there are too little who are fans of martial arts.

Flyweights could probably beat up most ordinary men. But the perception is that a big guy will assume MM couldn't reach his chin six feet up or get a takedown, therefore they're less excited about watching small guys fight.

It's the same argument thrown at 155 back in the day. Guys were too small, not enough depth, I could beat them up, etc. Over time the depth and talent will emerge, so we just have to be patient.

The same thing will come up if Zuffa does a 115 division.

The top flyweights in the world would demolish any "ordinary" man. No questions asked.

High level Flyweight Vs any non Athlete, wouldn't even be close.

I agree with Mir, it is a common view and a retarded one.

the perception that someone who is 5'3 can't reach an average guys chin is silly. Mark hunt was 13 inches shorter than struve and found his chin a lot

Exactly, Mirs comment is utter bs and tbh I dont like watching Mir fights; because just now he cant.

Mir was a WEC commentator and has a ton of respect for those weight classes. He used to jizz anytime Miguel Torres did something.

He went on to say how stupid it would be for a fan to think that.

UFC puts the focus on weight especially at the lighter divisions whereas boxing promotes individual fighters and matchups. I hate the way the UFC operates in this manner.

I don't know about that ,.....but there is a thing about factoring bigger guys in fighting I general. In any fight

I think it certainly plays a factor. However there are also lots of people who can appreciate their incredible technique, quickness and conditioning.

I'm 6'5 235 pounds, quite strong and in the prime of my life.......mighty mouse would absolutely kick my ass :D

that's exactly how I feel. an elite mma fighter would strangle you in a minute, but you could probably kick Floyd's ass, though.

Here's a feather/lightweight beating a trained 400lb professional boxer. The thought of some untrained big man with no ability to actually land a technical punch beating a world class light/feather/bantam weight is pretty laughable.

It's an assumption based on anecdotal evidence and the rate of obesity in North America. I was being generous, too. Your "average" 220 pound male probably struggles to break 7:30.

average 220 pound male will struggle to run a mile in any time

I guess we need some JMMA-style freakshow fights, then. Bring in Jose Cansceo or Dave Bautista and let Darren Uyenoyama beat the shit out of them.

the average 220 pound man here is about 5'8 or 9 of pure lard so yeah, They might be able to walk a mile. maybe

I remember the first time I got on the wrestling mat. Was straight bullied by a kid 20 pounds lighter than me. Very humbling experience.

I have heard those names before but have no idea who they are.
