It was obviously a good fight, even perhaps a great fight - but was it all-time great status, like many claim?

Positives first:

Man, those entrances! 2 of the most iconic and intense walk-out songs ever, Sandstorm meets DMX - Intro.

The stare-down was f*cking mental, you knew these boys were going to go for it.

Amazing stand-and-bang fight, Just Bleed fans got their dose also, a lot of blood and rock em' sock em'.

Great that Wanderlei made it somewhat competitive by dropping Chuck in the second round also, I thought Wandy had a genuine chance at taking that round at that stage.

Now for the negatives:

Wanderlei was a beast at 205 in PRIDE, but he was clearly undersized in this fight. He really should be at 185 and I think will all know this. Chuck was towering above him and the reach difference was also sizable - he just looked too small.

Very few people realize that Wanderlei was riding a 2 loss slide, which were both brutal stoppages. He was also 2-3 in his last 5, being totally objective and honest - Wanderlei was shot already!

Then you realize that Chuck was on a 2 loss slide also! It's a pity that these 2 had to fight each other whilst both riding losses and on the tail-end of their careers, very sad actually.

What a pity this was a co-main event, I cannot believe they didn't have this headline it's own card. Even though the main events back then were still 3 rounders, I wish this was a 5 rounder - it deserved it.

Finally, Chuck pussied out. This was supposed to be "stand and bang", of course winning is paramount, but there seemed like a secret gentlemen's agreement that they'd stand and see who'd fall first.

Chuck took Wanderlei down a la Johny Hendricks style to secure round 2, meh. Then, at the start of round 3 he goes full-Bader and tries a takedown immediately after the bell. Then with 20 seconds left, time for all out brawl time!? Nope - takes him down again a la Johny, and there you go 30-27... meh.

Also, how can an all-time great fight - which some people call the GOAT fight, be a 3 round, 15 minute, 30-27 decision? Between 2 fighters who were 0-4 combined in their last 4 combined fights, 3 of which they were KO'd... Just doesn't sound GOAT status to me.

Thoughts on my rant lol?

Still a great fight, not taking too much away. Congrats to both on putting it all on the line also.

Not really. It was a good fight, but had it been two smaller names, it would have been forgotten within six months.

It was like Randy vs Timmeh. Context made it what it was.

Second Chuck thread you made in the course of a few hours.

Couple of years too late.

Entertaining but not THAT great.

As a huge Wanderlei fan, I thought it was a good fight, but it's definitely not in my top 10 fights of all time, maybe not even in my top 30. The most surprising part was that neither guy got KTFO. At that point in their careers it seemed like one of them just had to get KTFO because of how many times they were dropped/KO'd in the fights leading up to it.

lol...I don't think he was shot, he just fought and got KO'd by two all time great strikers and legends of the sport in Mirko Crocop and Dan Henderson.

Even when the fight was finally signed for UFC 79 many fight fans knew both fighters had taking a beating over the years both appeared on the down end of two great runs.

The fight itself, lived up to the hype and was amazing ...to this day I couldn't believe they didn't make it a 5 round fight ...this was prior to UFC finally making some fights 5 rounders.

As for the Entrances! You were very right on that......gives me chills to this day!

Yes

Still was exciting
Was good to see Chuck going for the TD to win the rounds

Couture vs Sylvia really confused me when I was a new fan. I kept seeing replays of Couture dropping Sylvia and people saying it was a great/classic fight. When I finally got to watch it, I kind of thought it was boring.

I thought so, but I was there and maybe caught up in the energy of the place. I just remember haymakers flying and Chuck taking Wandy down for late round points

I think it was the first UFC I saw live in the arena ... So yes it was the best fight that ever happened

it was good until chuck pulled a bitch move by going for the takedown.

"OH YOU A WRASSLER NOW?"

Pretty close to what I was going to say. Damn near word for word, in fact!! Except that it should've happened a few years earlier.

I think it was the first PPV I ever ordered, as I recall Machida fought Sokoudjou on that one?

Boy I had high hopes for the Pride guys. I really thought the Pride guys were just better and would win easily. Wrong-o.

BTW -- the Chuck/Wand fight sucked

The hype was greater than the fight. Still enjoyable but noticeably lacking a finish.

It was fuckin' awesome!.. People saying it was just okay are being hipsters.
