It was obviously a good fight, even perhaps a great fight - but was it all-time great status, like many claim?
Positives first:
Man, those entrances! 2 of the most iconic and intense walk-out songs ever, Sandstorm meets DMX - Intro.
The stare-down was f*cking mental, you knew these boys were going to go for it.
Amazing stand-and-bang fight, Just Bleed fans got their dose also, a lot of blood and rock em' sock em'.
Great that Wanderlei made it somewhat competitive by dropping Chuck in the second round also, I thought Wandy had a genuine chance at taking that round at that stage.
Now for the negatives:
Wanderlei was a beast at 205 in PRIDE, but he was clearly undersized in this fight. He really should be at 185 and I think will all know this. Chuck was towering above him and the reach difference was also sizable - he just looked too small.
Very few people realize that Wanderlei was riding a 2 loss slide, which were both brutal stoppages. He was also 2-3 in his last 5, being totally objective and honest - Wanderlei was shot already!
Then you realize that Chuck was on a 2 loss slide also! It's a pity that these 2 had to fight each other whilst both riding losses and on the tail-end of their careers, very sad actually.
What a pity this was a co-main event, I cannot believe they didn't have this headline it's own card. Even though the main events back then were still 3 rounders, I wish this was a 5 rounder - it deserved it.
Finally, Chuck pussied out. This was supposed to be "stand and bang", of course winning is paramount, but there seemed like a secret gentlemen's agreement that they'd stand and see who'd fall first.
Chuck took Wanderlei down a la Johny Hendricks style to secure round 2, meh. Then, at the start of round 3 he goes full-Bader and tries a takedown immediately after the bell. Then with 20 seconds left, time for all out brawl time!? Nope - takes him down again a la Johny, and there you go 30-27... meh.
Also, how can an all-time great fight - which some people call the GOAT fight, be a 3 round, 15 minute, 30-27 decision? Between 2 fighters who were 0-4 combined in their last 4 combined fights, 3 of which they were KO'd... Just doesn't sound GOAT status to me.
Thoughts on my rant lol?
Still a great fight, not taking too much away. Congrats to both on putting it all on the line also.
