War Room OT Discussion v2

Higher weight classes need something to take any spotlight away from Conor at this point. This would've been a much higher event if Conor Mayweather didn't exist. If Jones fought Lesnar, does that mean HW permanently? He potentially could try to just win that fight and then come back and be seen as the best all weight. I would think he is already seen as that
I would love to see Jones at HW. I had him beating most Heavyweights years back and wanted to see him fight Cain.

In a perverted way it really makes sense. I don't know what the hell to expect from that fight but it's an interesting enough matchup and reasonably legitimate, so for a circus fight I suppose it's a really good one. Would love to see Jones finish his career at HW. After all the time he spent putting on mass (cough cough supplements), and fighting heavy on his frame and doing well with it, he seems ready to carry up at like 225-230, which is plenty heavy. Not sure he is a better fighter than Stipe though. That might be a nightmare for him.

I just realized Jones is the only person to beat him. A good resume at 2 weight classes, when it's all said and done he's one of those guys that could possibly be mentioned in a top 10 or top 15 all time MMA greats. (Assuming he still does well after this)

Yea man. He pretty much had the HW division on lock but his training partner was the champ so he moved down. That's why most people were calling this a clear #1 v #2 all weight that we haven't seen in ages. I kinda want Cormier to retire at this point unless he wants to try a quick run at HW.

I still want to see a Johnson fight. Forget if he is still retired or called bs on that whole thing but it's a fight that needs to happen

Stipe is turning into the best HW of UFC history imo (if you look, the lineage isn't crazy hard to beat, especially with number of defenses). Jones does well against most of them imo but I wouldn't comment how a stipe fight would go

True. I don't think Jones survives Johnson's punches but most likely he gets taken down and tapped.

LHW is so lopsided. Cormier, Jones, and Johnson are all guys I think do well at HW and then the rest of the division i think can't handle the top three at all. Some decent talent is moving up though

Such a great night of fights. Aside from Cyborg tenatievly putting a soccer mom to sleep, and the human ambien that was Woodley/Maia.

Jones was spectacular. Did not know what to expect at all from Jon after the layoff, but damn. Took the first round and got a takedown, though Cormier came back great at the end of the round. Second round was much closer, but Cormier grabbed it, but Jones worked the body the whole time. By the 3rd round, Cormier was done. Those body shots worked wonders. Had Cormier getting nervous about them, and then BOOM. Just done.

Also, I have no sympathy for Cormier. Acting like that after a fight is just not a good look, no matter how emotional you get. And I am talking about him refusing to stand for the anouncement and then arguing and shit with Dana in the background. And Rogan needs to be slapped. Stop interviewing the loser, especially if the dude has been knocked out and then broke down.

Where do you guys rank Jones all time P4P? Last I watched MMA I had it

GSP
Anderson
Fedor

Most people would probably put Anderson and i would agree these days considering he has top 5 wins in 3 weight classes and was champ in 2 and the GOAT at 1.
I won't put anyone over GSP until they can go as long as he did without losing a round

I give Cormier the benefit of the doubt, because he was OUT out and I've dealt with enough concussed individuals to know how scrambled that can leave you. Let alone the realisation of his loss.
Rogan knew better, so no excuse for that really.
Interested to see Jones go up to HW, but not really interested in a Lesnar fight.

I think Jones destroys Brock, but, yeah, Stipe is a much worse matchup and a much better fighter than Brock ever was. I'd want to see Jones against a HW before attempting to pick that one, though if I had to, I'd say 55% Jones.

Ed: Saw Jones' comments. He doesn't seem too confident that he could beat Stipe and especially doesn't think it's worth the risk until Stipe can raise his profile.

I agree that he shouldn't have been interviewed in that state. Let him have his dignity. Also, he could have been classier but damn, it really came through how much he wanted it, and he made huge improvements from the first fight. He really has nothing to be ashamed about (other than being a sore loser). Jones is fucking unreal, but DC is as close to a worthy rival as anyone could ever be.

Respect to DC -- word was he was focusing on his striking for this fight and he made solid strides. I don't think I've ever seen a much shorter fighter so nonchalantly stalk down a taller guy like that before. He didn't rely on a high up guard and footwork to get in and out -- he just slowly walked forward, up right and almost awkwardly parried his way in. And man, his chin is iron.

But Jones is just on another level -- guy uses his length perfectly and just such high level with straight strikes and tdd. He would give Lesnar fits.

DC's pacing and defense were also much better than the first fight. Jones adjusted well in the third, though. He was landing his usual stuff while people try to close the gap, but then effectively resetting before DC got the payoff (that is, he was taking some light punishment to get his range but then not actually getting to do work at the range). I was thinking about what kind of adjustments DC would make, if any, and then boom. Jones is such a great fighter. I hope he gets a chance to carve up Lesnar. One of the most annoying things to be in my MMA fandom was the way the UFC ditched the HW division for a while to avoid bidding wars and tried to pretend that the guys the had were the best, and a lot of casual fans bought it. Brock was ridiculously overrated in that period.

I was on the sidelines completely with betting, as I liked all the odds. Did you lay anything down?

Is anything more fun than Sherdog after a big event? Especially when your guy wins.

I have been saying Jones would beat Lesnar for years. Like, just those kicks to the legs and body DC took. Lesnar can't take those.
