That post was not a dig at you. Your statement was merely an example for a totally different point I was making. Sorry, I should have disclaimed. As for this screed, when you've watched the world do pretty much nothing despite constant warnings for the past 50 years, it's not closed minded to believe drastic action is needed and waiting for a technological miracle to save our arses because we have other issues to deal with is not going to do the job.I don't know that AI will be some magic technology that saves the environment.. maybe it will be. Hopefully, it will be. But just like machine guns and chemical weapons ended up being pretty high up on everyone's apocalyptic danger radar in 1920 but were pretty far down it by even the 1950s.. Global warming seems dangerous now but it's at most going to end up being the machine gun of the 21st century. If AI continues to mature, it will pose more of a potential danger than global warming. If energy technology develops and every redneck has an antimatter engine in his truck, that's going to be more of a potential danger than global warming. If genetic engineering continues to develop to the point that you can program new life like a video game, that's going to be more of a potential danger than global warming. Etc etc etc.
If pretty much just any avenue of any currently rapidly developing technology develops just a bit past what we have now, the potential danger of global warming is going to seem like nothing by comparison. If I had to guess, I'd guess that all these technologies will continue to develop but it doesn't take a genius to guess that maybe just one will. Moreover, all of them offer triival solutions to global warming anyways; AI will be smart enough to make an intelligent solution, genetic engineering means we can just make a carbon eating germ thingy, and development of energy technology is.. well, green energy.
If global warming really does end up being the big thing that we have to worry about then the 21st century is going to be easy peasy lemon squeezy. I doubt that it will be though and all the alarmists getting super paranoid about it seem closed minded and unintelligent to me. Save your paranoia; other things that are going to happen in the 21st century probably need its attention more.
