Lincoln’s only purpose was to keep the Union in tact.

If it was simply over slavery, he would have never been willing to allow slavery to be federally protected forever, which he was willing to do if the South did not secede.

Exactly, Lincoln was willing to allow the status quo to remain in order to preserve the Union. The South was willing to split up the Union so they could spread slavery into new territory.

Also, I just looked that guy's posts up. He was/is a big boxing fan. All of his posts are about boxing. You can search my entire post history and see that I don't know anything about boxing.

And the South wanted to secede to protect slavery and make sure it spread westward.

No, they wanted to separate for many reasons. The expansion of popular sovereignty was one of the reasons. They certainly wanted to protect the right to own slaves, but they weren’t required to use them. Slavery wasn’t a requirement of the Confederacy, it was left up to each state to decide.

The Northern industry simply did not wish to compete with slavery labor. If you think it was over moral issues, you are sadly mistaken. The Northern businessmen realized that it was much cheaper to use cheap laborers, than to invest in slaves. They also needed to attract immigrants to come and do their work. The promise of hard labor was worth it to immigrants who figured they would tough it out for a while then maybe save up enough to get some land.

If you want examples of just how racist the people in the North were, I can suply plenty.
