Lincoln was willing to accept the status quo to avoid bloodshed between Americans, but he was certainly not willing to let slavers spread out all over the country, and rightly so.
The fight was between the North who wanted to spread industrialization and the South who wanted to spread slavery... right?
The fight was because Lincoln would not let the states secede.
The South didn’t want war, they just wanted to separate.

What you don’t understand is that it wouldn’t matter what the reason was or who it was, whether it was Alabama, South Carolina, Michigan or Massachusetts, Lincoln would have killed everyone in whichever state, who tried to leave the Union.
Lincoln’s only purpose was to keep the Union in tact.
If it was simply over slavery, he would have never been willing to allow slavery to be federally protected forever, which he was willing to do if the South did not secede.
