I think that "Trumpism" is only going to keep burrowing in deeper and deeper, even if his name gets distanced from it, due to the structural advantages that have been built in over the last 15 or so years. And with the way redistricting is going to go, things aren't likely to improve. If the GOP had to actually compete with rival political and social ideas in large swaths of their domain, it would be different. But the hyper partisan safe districts and almost complete lack of accountability in the Senate means that the real competition is internal. Primaries have so often become a competition to promise the biggest, most heinous power fantasies involving punishment for the other side. All the worst, ugliest, most aggressive and fractious ideas are pushing more and more to the front because that's what happens when there are minimal boundaries. They are like bratty children that have discovered the teacher can't actually force them to sit down and shut up during class time. What does someone do when they have almost no boundaries? The answer is.... whatever they want. And really, it makes perfect sense. Why on Earth should Mitch McConnell listen to anyone but his donors and private corporate interests? I mean, give me one good reason lol. There aren't any. He knows he is literally immune to losing elections in his own state, and he knows that the structure of the Senate map gives his party enormous advantages. Furthermore, just about the only thing that would piss his constituents off would actually be compromise and cooperation lmao. The bloodthirsty portion of the GOP base gets to revel in power fantasies of social and political control, and guys like Mitch get to actually pull those levers of control to enrich themselves personally.
