I agree that Confederate nostalgia should be eradicated. I'm all for stigmatizing their flag to the point that it's removed from courthouses, state flags, etc. And that's because EVERYONE knows what it is and it stands for.

But these monuments and buildings of obscure Confederate figures that only huge history buffs are aware of are comparatively harmless. They make all the headlines and even centrists get shocked and outraged. Strategically, I think other ways of building sympathy are better. When movements are trying to build popular support, you have to pick your spots.

Maybe I'm wrong, who knows. Not a huge deal, either. Especially if the momentum continues and gains in other areas are made.

Someone visiting from out of town might not be aware of the significance of "obscure Confederate figures" but don't you think the locals who pass them by every day know who they are? If I were black and every day I had to pass a "obscure Confederate figure" who was part and parcel of the oppression of my ancestors and helped perpetuate it to this day, I'd say people ought to be shocked and outraged.
