Meant to tag @Trotsky @Jack V Savage @Tycho Brah @Denter @Prokofievian @TheGreatA but obviously I want anyone to weigh in

Hmm I love me a good -ism but personally I don't feel sufficiently attached to any of these labels to try to defend a set of core tenets. Maybe liberalism.

The last group I felt actively a part of was atheism but that was pretty simple in terms of commitment - don't believe in god, but go ahead and believe in whatever the hell else you want. Not hell though. Damnit.

Ex.fucking.cuse me?

They're actually pretty low on my totem pole of hardcore but they're still iconic.

Millions of Dead Cops, Bad Brains, Gang Green, System Society Decontrol, Minor Threat, Circle Jerks, Cro-Mags, I'd put them over the Misfits though. I always preferred Morris to Rollins as a singer for Black Flag, but they made some bangers and their influence on hardcore and pink in general is not to be understated.

Just the small disagreement about the dangers vs tourists lol, everything else is spot on.

I still remember his old stories about his war against Iggy Pop and how he was kicking The Cures flower pots everywhere lmao.

Speaking of music Manchester Orchestra, one of my all time favorite bands just dropped a new video for their new album 21 hours ago. I'm a big fan of concept albums and albums that tell a story. Their songs are pretty fucking dark and lyrically they're at the top of the list for me. I highly suggest having song lyrics breakdowns if you dig into their discography

I always conceptualized agnostic as the absence of belief in a deity and atheism as the affirmative belief in there being no deity.

Yea I had that argument 300 times with fucking Zeke and others when it was the topic du jour. Agnostic imo opens you up to way too many stupid hedging possibilities - if you're functionally absent the belief, that's atheist enough for me (nominal Jews, Christians etc. welcome too!)

I never got into black flag. I was never a big fan of them. I liked minor threat and Ian Mackaye a lot. Just a much better musician and of course Fugazi is a legendary band.

I understand Black Flags importance I just don’t like them all that much.

I'd be lying if I said I understood the appeal of Black Flag or Henry Rollins. Or, really, most anything that sounds like Black Flag.

The liberal vs leftist conversation a thread or 2 got me thinking what are all the political labels and their antithesis?

I could probably Google this but that no fun.

Easiest is left vs right so

Left vs Right
Progressive vs Conservative ?
Liberal vs illiberal? (Seems easy enough)
Authoritarian vs Libertarian or Anarchist?
Reactionary vs Woke?

What are the different labels and what do they mean?

Is this topic thread worthy? Lounge worthy? Or should I just get back to twitter memes?

I support making a thread just for the chaos it would cause.

I always thought of agnostic as not caring enough to argue the point either way

pretty sure we all go thorough an "angsty" phase... i played drums in a pantera/ anthrax type band and got my first tattoo at 16 had longer hair than my sister (chicks loved it) ...
just look at people in college right now all full of piss and vinegar .. give em a few years paying their own rent and finding a real job and most people understand the rose tinted glasses come off

Rollins hated metal dudes and he hated punks who drank and did drugs. He really didn’t like anyone to be quite honest.

he was very into “his mind and body.” He believed both have to be strong. Good advice for sure but he was def way too serious for me. The dude wasn’t fun to be around. He also felt like he never truly belonged in black flag. He always felt undeserving.

I’ve seen a lot on Rollins throughout the years.

Well I wouldn't reccomend it on this forum if you want an actual topic, but I was just about to post on this earlier lol.

Leftist vs liberal is the inherent battle as someone on the left, because liberals often stand as road blocks to the Leftist policy I believe in.

That's not to say I don't stand with Chomsky, Vaush, and Brooks on how not voting for Biden in an attempt of national and geopolitical harm reduction is childish.

That's also Tankie shit. I feel that when one sees "Marxist" in something they immediately assume communist, but Libertarian Socialists and State Socialists feuding isn't anything inherently new.

That's also sort of an issue the left has, and why I don't have twitter, there's ideological fragmentation that gets in the way of pragmatic restitution. That's why I think Chomsky is best because I believe approaching politics from a historical standpoint instead of a hypothetical one is best.

It's an annoying problem. One I feel like is a cancer on the Left. The crazies on the right don't inherently feel a need to be superior to people on the right so there's unity there. The crazies on the left feel like they need to be superior to the other people on the left.

I've been writing about this subject, but frankly I've no answer to the issue. Hell look at how right wingers love Anarcho-Capitalism and claim Libertarian without knowing even basic history of what Libertarianism actually is before Objectivist philosophy poisoned the well.

I think there should be some distinction between lack of belief and the aggressive secularist types like Ron Reagan.

Reagan famously says he's not afraid of burning in hell. Even when i was aggressively nonreligious when I was younger, I was could never claim to be do confident that eternal damnation didn't scare me at all.

Yeah I guess I'm looking for what defines them or if naturally against them.

In leftist vs liberal I think I'm aligned with @Trotsky who can correct me.

A leftists wants equality or a form of collectivism above all else.

For lack of better terms a liberal wants freedom of association and movement above all else.

I did make a thread so we don't have to muddy this thread up.

Just had a roller-coaster ride of hate and love on these two short sentences. So confused.
Lol I think Misfits are iconic and Hybrid Moments was amazing, my old band used to cover Where Eagles Dare, but a bit more shouty Oi! Style, but I've never been that big of a fan. Horrorbilly was the best thing to happen because of Misfits.

Also Morris was a hell of a singer.

I can respect that. I think Minor Threat is the superior band, but I attempt to try and avoid being too judgemental on what others enjoy artistically.

I'd be lying if I said I understood the appeal of Black Flag or Henry Rollins. Or, really, most anything that sounds like Black Flag.
Broken homes wishing for broken bones.
the book made me want custom sickle and hammer spurs as an edgy early teen lol.

As to Rollins, are you talking about as a person? The dude has lived one of the most incredible lives out of anyone in modern history. That's just a fact.

Fair enough. And yeah, Keith is a bona fide frontman.
