What even is a cult classic? Several of the films listed here had big budgets, made money, and are widely acknowledged. Is the "Scarface" entry the remake with Al Pacino, or the original? Because neither are cult classics as such: the one with Al Pacino is one of the most legendary gangster movies of all time, and the original was significant enough that someone actually wanted to remake it.
How much does regionalism play into it? I liked "Shin Gojira", but that wasn't a small movie in Japan. It's a minuscule movie in the West though. How about old movies? That factors into the original "Scarface" as well, but I bet I'm in a rather small group of 30-year olds who have seen "Lawrence of Arabia", "Shichinin no Samurai", "Seppuku", and "North By Northwest". Do old movies become cult classics as the original "fanbase" of these movies die off, and it has to fall upon young film connoisseurs to keep their memory alive?
