I still am not getting Trump maintaining over 50% with the base with primaries at this point. Is there anything he can do or say that would make these people say they should nominate someone else? His lasting power going into 2024 is a real embarrassment.

It could be interpreted through the coupling lens. To admit that Trump is corrupt and incompetent (even if you favor tax cuts for the rich and cutting SNAP and Medicaid) is to in some sense acknowledge that his critics have a point. I think a decoupled view is that there's a piece of trash on the ground on your yard, and you pick it up and throw it out, but the coupled one is that the trash is part of the yard, and you would have to bring in an excavator. I think that's also behind the need to pretend that Biden is taking bribes or senile or whatever (that is, if reconsidering Trump isn't an option, we can deny reality or we can acknowledge it with regard to him but try to convince ourselves the alternative is worse).

What's hard to get? Biden is an absolute disaster that is overseeing the very real possibility of WW3(among many other things that are negatively affecting the general populace), and Trump got fucked by COVID. Before COVID, he was a lock for re-election. People gave Biden a chance, he blew it, and now they want Trump back. Forget Republicans. Trump is beating Biden nationally.

Don't ask why people are flocking to Trump. Ask how Biden fucked his term up so much, that they would flock to Trump. All Biden had to do was have an average term. He couldn't even muster that.

These numbers are meaningless though bruh. Trump could be up by 100pts. If he's the nominee he gets obligated by Biden or a dead Bin Laden. He's the greatest definition of unelectable we have seen in our lifetime, maybe we'll ever see.
