Tbh, this irks me as well.

When a fighter loses or has a subpar performance they become instabums or instacans.

Its fucked up.

It broke my heart when Chris leben quit on the stool like that, but I understood why

Bright side is it can open up a betting opportunity their next fight

I remember a bunch of crazy Mir fans were outraged when I compared the two of them (exciting, beloved veterans with some a couple of big-name wins and a lot of losses). I think Leben fans should have been more upset, but there are fewer of them and they aren't as intense or organized. Someone teased me about that, saying that I compared Mir to some obscure TUFer, and a troll (called KONE) took it seriously and kept insisting that I said it even though this started before the purge and it would have been findable.

They were right to make fun of you for comparing an MMA legend, to Chris Leben.

Yea, I use to have that quote about if you lose, you’re a can and if you a win, you’re a can crusher. Most of the heavies was filled with over the top broad statements about a fighters rank/ value. If you tried to pin people down, they began to look ridiculous. Like some would call a top five fighter a can. You could just ask them for ten fighters they think could beat that guy and the conversation would turn fast. I guess it’s persepctive but things leaned way too much on the negative side. That’s most of the internet though (including the WR)

Football still gets me. I’ve narrowed sports down to those two and feel like I should just cut it to MMA to avoid the pointless joy/ anger over a team I don’t control. I use to be into just watching the league but can’t get into that anymore.

I'm usually a fan of whoever I have money on

Why tf would you compare an MMA legend to Frank Mir?

I get pissed when people talk shit about Billy Beane based on super small sample sizes. Shit happens in baseball. Last night you had a team that won 59.3% of their 162 games vs. a team that won 59.9% of their games playing one nine-inning game. It's obvious that you can't draw any conclusions from that. It's like concluding that a coin is loaded based on a single flip.

Matt Hughes is the greatest WW of all time. Hockey, Trots, and Kpt all agree.

I'll always thank Frank Mir and Randy Couture for allowing me to bet Cain at plus/even money against Brock

They're both "legends" in the sense that they're fan favorites who were around forever and had lots of great fights. Neither was a great fighter, though.

Conversely, I remember people getting outraged by small differences in rankings. "X is the 5th best fighter in his weight class in the world." "No, he's seventh." "So you're saying you hate him and he's a can?!?! Fuck you!"

I don't think they deserve that credit. Cain was an absolute beast at that time. Amazed that Brock even got an early TD on that monster. Shame he turned into an injury gimp. He had the potential to become a true GOAT.

Yea, I had a brief period of that too. I don’t bet anymore either. It has that fantasy football aspect where you aren’t actually enjoying the event.

Putting aside the many other guys who were better than him, what's the argument for Hughes over GSmotherfuckingP?

I always admited Leben's warrior esque , go out on your shield type of mentality.

In the spirit of Arturo Gatti, wanderlei Silva, Orlando salido, jamie varner etc...

He would always take a fight on short notice...I think it was with Akiyami where he took it on short notice and won submission of the night. (Someone correct me If I'm wrong).

I guess what I'm saying is that the man has paid his dues to the sport and deserves our respect. Now would I put in the same caliber as Frank mir? Not exactly...but both have had some dramatic wins and losses

Getting Cain as a dog right before the fight was incredible. One of my largest hits. Will always love Brown Pride.

I wonder what kind of money hes making wrestling

Not much, but I think an argument can be made that he was the greatest of his time. GSP obviously dwarfed him, though. Hughes was a torch passer.

Man, you REALLY hate Leben. @Lead, you see this?

I don't "hate" Leben as much as I think he's insignificant when held up to Mir's accomplishments.

Leben's biggest accomplishment was welcoming Anderson Silva into the UFC, by gracefully putting his head into Silva's knees. Admirable, but not so great of a fighting accomplishment.
