Unfortunatey, we got this highly anticipated fight 5 years too late. Both men knocked from their lofty pedestals and not in their primes anymore. Wanderlei has basically been Knocked out cold badly twice in the year of this fight, and Chuck was coming off two losses. Wand comin from PRIDE and makin his UFC DEBUT.

Notably Wanderlei only boxed with Chuck, and in that area Chuck's superior range and Wandy kind of playing into his style anyway, busted Wanderlei up....but both men showed alot of heart and grit.

How did you feel about this fight at the time?

2 good rounds almost the full first round was a feeling out process but they started going hard at the last min of round one. Round 2 and3 were pretty great.

Alot of people were super mad at Chuck shooting on Wanderlei at the end but it was smart. Career is on the line here.
Chuck introduced everyone to NCAA Division 1 Liddell in that fight. Wand probably told him "concession accepted" while on the ground.

I was completely disinterested at the time. Years before I would been stoked, even though I knew Liddell had lost to Rampage who then lost to Wandy.

Might not be UFC related but it was much the same for Mayweather/Paquiao. In their primes I would have killed to see that fight. But when it finally happened, I barely cared.

I picked disappointing but honestly it’s both
Good for what it was
Disappointing for what it wasnt

Wand was able to bust out these two classics later in the UFC

Wand vs Stann my all time favorite fight fan of both guys but someone had to fall. The Cung Le fight was epic too! His fights with Rich Franklin weren't half bad either but not quite to the same caliber as those two that you posted.

a bit off-topic but the winner of Franklin vs Hendo was to coach against Bisping on TUF 9 just imagine how different history would have been had Franklin got the nod. many folks thought he won it was razor thin, crazy to think about well I did just eat a gummy. lol Also Bisping put one hell of a beating on Cung Le as well definitely one of his best performances and Le was Juiced to the gills too.

Yeah Le got the fuckin shit beat out of him the whole fight. Worst loss in his career.

This is when it should have happened :(

But we should be glad we got it, and happy with a war.

Also, Wand pre-surgury was much better looking. IMO
Fug Chug 😩

I honestly thought it was pretty meh. Wand never really looked like his PRIDE self while in UFC. He had shades of it in the Jardine fight but that was about it. All of his other fights was just him throwing dorky windmill punches. And Chuck didn't look like the ferocious monster he was just 2-3 fights prior.

That being said I would have liked to see them have a second fight. I was disappointed that Dana never booked it.

I'm glad it happened, but dammit, I wish it could have happened a few years earlier. Maybe even in PRIDE. (I know Rampage murdered Chuck in PRIDE but I wish it could have been set up differently, to where they met right off the bat. Seeing Wand murder Chuck similar to how he murdered Rampage would have been awesome)

Wanderlei looked exactly like his Pride self, his punches has always been windmill type punches. Chuck would probably have beaten him at any point in their careers.

He just boxed with Chuck

No kicks. No knees. No clinch takedowns

It wasnt Wand's usual self

Maybe that was Wanderlei’s gamelan? Who knows, but his striking hands wise has always always been sloppy wide hooks. He never ever established a jab or thrown a cross to save his life. I stick with what I said, Chuck Liddell beats him the Octagon, in the Ring he would have more of a difficult time but eventually win.

Anyway I dont know if it was Wanderlei's gameplan or not but he usually has alot more tools to use than he had that night

Would vote both if I could. Loved the fight but wished it was at final conflict 2003.
