Wanderlei Silva gets lifetime ban

Had Wand not announced his retirement, they would just give him one or two years. Since he won't fight anymore, it doesn't make much of a difference and they don't need any mercy.

Now... how enforceable is the fine? It would be funny as hell if Wand decided he "misses Brazil" and dodged the fine too.

I don't even think he has to go to Brazil. Since he can never reapply for license because they banned him, he has no reason at all to pay any fines they give him.

???

Wanderlei had a great career; making lots of money doing what he loved to do.

Indeed

I'm just saying I have inherently more respect for a guy who put his ass on the line to deliver a product worth paying for than someone who took a cushy gvmt job. If you think Wand didn't pay a serious price with his body for the fights he delivered you must have a rose tinted view on prizefighting. Yes, I realize he wasn't fighting for free but I think there's a lot to appreciate for what he did if you're a fan of the sport. GSP is another fighter who made millions upon millions and still he never went out of his way to make fights more exciting, he didn't put his body on the line the way Wand did, and I'm not saying he had to - he didn't owe that to anyone, and that's what makes it special when fighters do go out and fight that way every single time.

Don't you think that was Japan's reaction when Dana came to PRIDE with Liddel?

All jokes aside, ONE FC is in mainland China now. If their popularity and pay opens up, I wouldnt be surprised if more.fighters go.

Pride paid better, and fighters fought in an environment where they felt respected. All of them loved fighting there and I bet a lot of the current top guys (I.e. jones) wish they could experiance the golden era.

Even though I think Wand is a can, this is ridiculous.
You don't just make up whatever punishment you want, because others need to be taught a lesson.

Everyone should get the same penalty for an equal offense.

Don`t you respect more the man who comes up to you and discloses his wrongdoings face to face, instead of a guy who literally runs out the back door in order to avoid letting the truth come out?

Overeem literally ran out the back door too after the Brock fight. Then, instead of punishing by default like they did Wanderlei they went ahead and gave him another chance at being tested weeks after the contest. THEN, after he pissed hot, he got 9 months.

fucking bullshit but whatever. Wand should enjoy his retirement.

It's funny, I was always told, "It's better to refuse a drug test than to fail".

Apparently that's not the case.. Vitor fails a drug test and gets a title shot, Wand refuses and gets banned for life, logic at it's finest.

hmm...I guess it's better to take the failure and receive the title shot after all.

kids, pay attention out there.

fuck the NSAC, I would side with fighters like Wand over the POS NSAC any day.

Lifetime ban is ridiculous, people trying to flex and look like they are cleaning up the sport. It's pretty fucking ridiculous to get a lifetime ban.

Not sure if it matters but don't agree with that at all, year or two max. A two year ban is enough to make people never want to dodge a test.

The problem is they gave Chael a two year ban for testing positive. If the penalty for dodging is the same as failing everyone would dodge. The two year penalty for Chael was harsh imo, but once they imposed it they needed to do much worse to Silva.

I don't think you know what "audacity" means. I think it's more likely he rolled the two into one, using the opportunity of a retirement speech to also slam the UFC and Dana for their treatment of fighters. I also think the UFC had a part to play in the NSAC's ruling, maybe because they didn't back Wand or give him the support he asked for. He probably felt betrayed and further thrown under the bus by the UFC after all he's done to help them be a successful company.

Maybe you should look up the word then? Sorry if it confuses you.

Poor Wand, I don't really know how to feel about the situation now.

Hope down the road more information surfaces because it's tough to make proper judgement at this point.

Even if you had a case here....Wanderlei ran before Chael was even sentenced. Wanderlei's hearing was dragged out longer.

It shouldn't apply to Wanderlei in this case

I don't know how things work there, but NSAC is a government agency. Isn't there a possibility of them getting this money legally, should Wand refuse to pay?

This isn't the United States justice system. It's an athletic commission and they're free to govern as they see fit. Wanderlei...and Chael...both knew that. It's an agreement they made in attempting to get a license at any point in that state.

If they want to ban him for 30 lifetimes, it's their call, and Wand knew that going in and has NO ONE to blame but himself...just like Chael. Can't blame this on the ref...can't blame it on Dana...can't blame it on an interpreter...can't blame it on not understanding the rules.

It's Wanderlei's fault, just like it's Chael's fault.

Orgs without the NSAC around could look better and better in the near future. Not the UFC's fault, tbh.

I wish the UFC would sell Pride back to some Japanese businessmen or something.. Around the same time they sell the UFC.

Just because allowed to do that doesnt mean it's right.
Wandy broke the rules and he should be punished, but it's unfair to punish him more heavily because he's a star.

Yes it's just like not paying your taxes. They can levy your bank account and foreclose on your property.

How is it wrong?

It's sending a simple message; running from a drug test is worse than pissing hot.

The real issue here isn't that they didn't hit Chael with a lifetime ban, the real issue is that they should have hit Overeem with one.

The ban for refusing to test SHOULD be greater than the one for testing positive.

No precedence for this. Should have warned fighters that from now on if you refuse a test you will be banned for life. Should have banned Wand 2 years like Chael. They are setting an example with Wanderlei.

Again....no precedence. Overeem ran and got a 9 month suspension. That is it.

Bullshit decision. Give him 2 years (which is still harsh) at the most and then announce "From this day forward if you run you will have a lifetime ban"

Commission:

Commisioner to Overeem: Overeem, you ran but we like you and you are polite so you only get a 9 month ban.

Commisioner to Wanderlei: Wanderlei, even though there is no precedence we are giving you a lifetime ban for your 1st offense.

Bunch of clowns

So much butthurt in this post..lol

The worst assumption you can make about someone not taking a drug test is that they would have tested positive. So why should an incognito carry a heftier punishment than the worst possible result? Are there any substances one could possibly test positive for that would result in a lifetime ban?
