Both guys beat the champs that came before them.

Volk beat Max. Cool.

Max won the title and defended it 3x

Aldo beat the shit out of Faber who won the 145 title and then won his next 9 straight.

And Faber was still fighting for titles 6 years after he lost the belt and 4 years after Aldo beat him.

He didn't need to beat him 3x. The first fight was so ridiculously lopsided that it would have been unethical to put that match together again.

Volk faced a LW champ while he was champ. They fought twice.
He lost both and got KTFO the 2nd time.


Aldo faced a LW champ 2x who was champ while Aldo was champ. (Frankie)
Aldo beat him soundly both times.


If Aldo SPOKE ENGLISH he very very likely would have been the first "champ champ" while Conor McGregor was still unclogging toilets or taking welfare checks.


If you want to act like aldos wins aren't impressive when talking about them years afterwards then the same filter should be applied to Volks wins.

Volk almost got choked out by Ortega? Who? That guy who lost 4 of his last 6? Omg what a trash weak ass win!!

He’s not, Aldo was a two time ufc champ as well plus a WEC champ. Volk has to defend 2-3 times and we can talk.
 
If you ignore what title were attached to the fights and look at the quality of opponent beaten, I think you can make the case that Max has a comperable if not slightly better resume then Aldo.

I still rate Aldo highly. However, this was the first time something like this has ever been done. Look at Volk's resume. It's impressive as fuck.

As is Aldos.

They are very similar. Just peaked at different ages.

Both lost their 29th and 30th fights after good championship runs.

Both managed to beat the odds and regain the strap.

Both beat the champs who came before them.


Both 25-1 thru 26 fights
Both lost 3 of the next 4
Both 26-4 thru 30

Head to head win, 3-0 vs the guy that is 2-0 vs Aldo, regained the belt also.
Neither look like they will get the rematch against the guy that dethroned them.

I think Ilia at LW goes similar to Mcgregor, which makes it interesting.

If it's just a numbers game? Yes Aldo is still number 1. But head to head and other things come in to it too

Volk FW GOAT I have no problem with, but that doesn't mean he beats every FW ever (Topuria).

Prime Aldo (WEC and early UFC) vs Volk would've been super interesting though.
 
Volk would beat everyone Aldo beat. The other way around i very much doubt Aldo would beat all the guys on Volks resume. Volk is better.
