Volk benches 275lb 1 rep max

He might not walk around that much for 145, but he did say he got up to 176 for LW, which was his most recent fight
That is true, I'm thing when he is a fw he must be around 165-8ish and a near 300lb bench at that weight is very impressive

At 95kg I can bench 150kg and my arms are a good bit longer than Volks and I'm not even some gym rat, this isn't a great number but benching isn't an important strength to have for fighting.
So.... Not almost double your body weight. Not disproving his point.

Yes that's a good amount. Especially because that's probably not a focal point of his training as an MMA fighter.

That means he'd probably do 225 for 8 (2 plates on each side). For a short guy (easier bench) who's supposedly a peak athlete, it's aight.

Seems about right. Why would you need a max bench to be a good fighter?

Sherdog is becoming more ridiculous every day … “very average” … “not a good number” … “I can do more” … “just ok for a normal gym guy” … he’s benching 125kg, that’s more than most people in any gym - who are likely much bigger than little Volk and focused only on lifting - and especially that’s almost double his bodyweight, for an athlete who does not train powerlifting or bodybuilding but rather cardio and technique! It’s super impressive!

Please post your videos benching close to double your bodyweight. Ah yes, you don’t have any.

I can bench 100kg at a bodyweight of 78kg and as a martial artist - so not a lifter per se - I’m usually among the stronger people under 80kg bodyweight in any gym … and Volk does 25% more at 5% less bodyweight. He’s really strong in general and especially as a martial artist.

He weighs 170 walking around, benching 2 plates on each side for 8 reps (equivalent to 1RM of 275) is not that impressive, it's what a normal gym goer can do after 2-3 years of casual training. But I wouldn't expect fighters to have a strong bench, core strength and leg strength are more important.

I can't believe I'm outing myself as less than a 265 lb SherGod but I'm 155 lbs, non-athlete who benches 315 proper for 1 rep max so I don't think that's impressive for a world champion who probably is 170 lbs when he doesn't have to weigh in

No. He’s not. Lol.

275 isn’t even close to “more than most people in any gym” lmao & benching 220lbs at 172lbs isn’t remotely impressive either. At all. There are MULTIPLE high school kids in EVERY high school on earth that lift more than that on a daily basis.

I had a 335 bench /450 squat /470 deadlift in high school at 17yrs old & 160 lbs. I’m also like a foot taller than volk.

Compared to other high school kids at my school I was one of the stronger kids, compared to other people my weight globally that lift or compete I was mediocre. Even now after years of lifting my numbers are better than that but they aren’t close to elite or top tier of lifters my weight. Not even close.

he’s a strong guy compared to some rando stay at home IT dad but not compared to people that lift.

That’s just reality.

and I dunno what this “strong for a martial artist” shit is about there’s a million mma/boxer/bjj/kickboxers that are strong as hell.

He’s a great fighter & an awesome dude, but a 5’4”? athlete walking around 175+lbs benching 275 isn’t some impressive feat and I’m not pretending it is. Has nothing to do with sherdog being ridiculous. A lot of people here have lengthy experience lifting AND in martial arts and live in reality.

He can still be a phenomenal fighter & your idol without being a powerlifting God.

you should either 1) go to gyms other than planet fitness or 2) use the internet more

Where is the link? If you say "recent youtube video" might as well provide the actual f-ing video. IIt's nowhere to be found

i don't know why people keep using his size as why it's impressive. him being that short is actually an advantage because his ROM is much smaller than someone like Jon Jones. especially since he's wide in the chest too.

it's funny because those same people are also trying to shit on everyone else like "bet he benches more than you" type shit without realizing they're actually showing their ass because if they knew anything about weight lifting they'd understand how having a tiny ROM can improve your bench drastically. it's the whole reason why serious benchers all squeeze their shoulder blades together and arch the fuck out of their back.

Puts this in the 'Advanced' category for his bodweight of c.170 lbs.

This means it is exactly what people are saying it is 'a good and impressive lift'. No one is saying it is elite power lifting level, they are saying it is good for someone of his size whose training isn't focused on weightlifting.

He's also the best fighter at his weight in the world - literally a world-class athlete. I think it's reasonable to hold someone like that to a higher standard than your average athletic guy in the gym.

He benches more than Tyson fury

It’s a basic physics thing.
Fury’s reach is HUGE compared to a short guy like Volk.
Measuring the total Amount of work (mass x distance) and the leverage required of long armed people; Fury has to do a lot more than someone with arms much shorter to complete the same lift.

simply put: short people are better at these types of exercises per lb they weigh.

The fact there is a thread about this implies it’s some worldwide accomplishment.
It reminds me a lot of the “omg Islam Mak can run an 18:30 5k!” Threads

I doubt Volk benches a lot, therefore he isn't going to have an amazing bench. Having a strong lift isn't just about brute strength, technique and neuromuscular efficiency play a huge part in it as well.
