Volk being short is not a disadvantage...

Like all those tall lanky HW champions?

<{vega}>
Alistair Overeem would be the greatest HW ever if he could take a punch. Long legs, long arms. Jon Jones, Anderson Silva, Charlie Olives, all long and lanky.

It is a disadvantage for striking but it's supposed to be advantageous against wrestlers.

Being short is only a disadvantage when the reach disparity is similar, however in Volks case he will have the advantage in reach.
Also, being short makes it harder for your opponent to take you down. I can't wait for sherdog to crash tonight when Volk becomes champ champ.

I disagree that Arman and Alex have a lot of similarities.

I do agree that people are underestimating Volk.
He's the P4P king for a reason.
He toyed with Max and absolutely dismantled him in his last fight.

Do you think Alex will defeat Islam?

What about Volk, Fedor, DC, Cain, BJ, Cejudo, Aldo, Frankie Edgar, Mighty Mouse, etc?

Maybe because of Volk’s punching power, he will stay back a little and won’t shoot for takedown n GnP right away like others because he doesn’t have the same aura and chin as Khabib who would blitzkrieg without hesistancy.

Volk definitely looks short next to Islam but outside of height, he looks about the same size. He also doesn't look bloated and just ate himself up to the weight which is a positive sign. Usually when guys move up, it looks like they just didn't cut weight or watch what they are eating. He's still lean at a next weight class.

Nah, I think Volk has a lot more than just a puncher's chance, the puncher's chance goes without saying and everyone has that.

I'm saying I think Volk might actually be able to outgrind him, win a decision or get a late finish.

Good take. I tend to agree. I think its pretty likely that he simply won't have the ability to prevent the bigger, better-wrestling Islam from doing his thing, but if anyone could do it it's Volk.

His mental toughness, boxing and TDD are serious weapons. It's certainly possible that Volk could piece him up and prevent the takedowns long enough to take enough out of Islam's tank to ultimately win. I'd love to see it, but I wouldn't put any money on it.

If they were the same height he has a 1 inch advantage but giving up 4 inches in height he is at a deficit unless he’s punching Islam’s chest all night .

Except Volk is always punching up and it never matters.

I it will matter tonight .

People doing mental gymnastics to give Volk a chance

In combat sports, being taller is always an advantage, all things being equal.

Rarely are things all equal so yes, a shorter guy can sometimes win, but that's the same as a stronger fighter vs a weaker fighter, all things being equal, strength helps you...

In this case, Islam is no moron, so being taller, despite reach measurements will only help him, and if Volk wins, it's not because he's shorter, it's because he's just using tools other tall people haven't.

A good tall guy beats a good short guy, unless a tall guy lacks elements a short guy can capitalize on.
Size matters (or at least my GF said when she left me.)

Aside from Islam getting caught by Adriano Martins, which pretty much everyone considers a bit of a fluke, it's obvious his only real tough test and seemingly bad matchup in the UFC so far has been Arman Tsarukyan. Not sure how many sherbros actually watch the fights but if you haven't already you should definitely watch that one.

Now Volk is not the same fighter Arman is, but they do have a lot of similarities. And I know Islam is much improved from that fight, but you can also say the same about Arman as it was his very first UFC fight. But it was another stocky short guy with an endless gas tank and lots of tenacity, a treestump with low center of gravity... a lot like Volk. Now Tsarukyan is probably the better grappler, but Volk is certainly the better striker, with a lot more experience.

I also have a hard time seeing Makhachev losing to anyone right now, but one could argue that Volk is a more savy and more calculated version of Tsarukyan, with weaker grappling but significantly better striking and fight IQ. I have it 60/40 Islam, but I think Volk will really push him to the brink, this is a really interesting fight and I can't wait.

I just find it hard to believe a guy who got taken down and almost choked out by zombie Ortega is going to be able to withstand 5 rounds of volume grappling from a guy who is huge for LW.

A lot of people think I'm automatically equating height with victory, I'm not. All I'm saying is, if you take a brain, a clone them, put them in two bodies, two identical bodies, the only difference is height, then taller guy has the advantage, IMO. It doesn't count if you pick a super skilled short guy against a decent, but less skilled tall guy..

I mean, just look at how effective teeps and jabs are coming from a tall guy. Sherbros be uploading Mike Tyson as proof that short guys prevail for heaven sakes.
Well I mean in mma we had fedor, DC, GSP, Bj Penn, Frankie edgar... lots of shorter guys beat taller fighters often... add Jose Aldo... Lots of top guys in that list that were never tall for their divisions.
