jesus christ.

i say within a week we should know just how serious this is.

Agreed. Although it could be longer. It could be quarantined effectively in the rest of the world, but if it is running rampant in China, it is just a matter of time before it runs its course through the rest of the world.

If China can keep a lid on how bad it actually is there, it could potentially take longer for the full scope of this to become apparent.

I feel like there are hundreds of millions of Chinese people, asking themselves if a 1 in 50 chance of dying, is worth an extra week of vacation, and leaning towards a hard yes.

The virus has a relatively long incubation time of 10-14 days, meaning people can be spreading it to others before they even know they are sick. It may be hard to get a handle on this in just one week in terms of how its going to play out. Definitely though in the next 1-2 weeks we should know if the number of cases only slightly went up or exploded exponentially. If they explode we may be in for a rough ride. The Spanish Flu of 1918 that killed between 50-100 million people did all its damage in roughly 18 months. That a short period for that many corpses.

Also take to account that it takes time to diagnose people and all of them are waiting in massive queues. China should be transparent when it comes to diagnosing rate. Like others have said, there might be a lot more infected than what we are told.

My mother in law was a mid wife for Native Americans, they take this

Back in 1920, a young physician named Ernst Krebs published an account of his experience with Lomatium in the Bulletin of the Nevada State Board of Health. Krebs had been assigned by the Indian Bureau to the Washoe reservation, and he was there when the Spanish flu hit. (The so-called Spanish flu was an avian strain that killed more than 500,000 Americans, and between 20 and 100 million worldwide):

“…Whether a coincidence or not, there was not a single death in the Washoe tribe from influenza or its complications, although Indians living in other parts of the State where the root did not grow died in numbers. It was such a remarkable coincidence that a practicing physician who saw apparently hopeless cases recover without any other medication or care of any kind investigated the root. A preparation was prepared and employed in a great many cases among the whites, from the mildest to the most virulent types of influenza, and it proved, among other things, that it is the nearest approach we have today to a specific in epidemic influenza and the accompanying pneumonia… Other physicians were induced to give it a trial, with the same results. It is beyond the experimental stage, as its therapeutic action in this direction is established and beyond any doubt. The cases in which it has been used run into the hundreds. There is probably no therapeutic agent so valuable in the treatment of influenzal pneumonia.”

Lomatium dissectum is “a powerful antiviral plant used by Native Americans to survive the 1918 influenza epidemic may prove to be a strong modern-day cold and flu remedy” according to a report from the University of California. The root’s anti-viral action is combined with a respiratory clearing action that is especially useful for dealing with the secondary infections caused by many strains of influenza.

How long before people start faking illness in the US to collect likes on social media

I'm not trying to be edgy, it's the fear hype I don't care about.

I too have reservations about hitting the panic /fear button...
Especially after the swine flu , SARS hype.

However, I dont recall mass quarantines with those outbreaks.

I wonder if this one is more serious. Only 81 dead thus far

It's your bluster that makes it edgy. Shit is airborne and spreads before symptoms are present, that's big. SARS was only contact spread and it killed a good number of people.
I don't think anyone is truly afraid but being vigilant never hurt anyone.

I'm not sure anyone is panicking. No one I know is and most aren't even up to date on what is going on. I know my mother is probably freaking out but shes a hypochondriac

<22> be afraid guys. Stay indoors. And definitely dont have kids in this current climate. How irresponsible.

Just like ebola crisis 5 years ago so many chicken littles jumping the gun and blowing this thing out of proportion too early. My prediction is the same people demanding we bring global travel and economy to a halt based on nothing but rumor and poor quality/false information will once again look like complete fucking morons.

In these situations initial reports and data is usually way overblown and negatively skewed. We likely wont know much concrete for another month or even longer. It could get worse or it could not be that big of a deal, but nothing you read on the internet right now is going to be that accurate of an indicator of what the future holds so chill out.

Ebola hasn't went away, they're still getting outbreaks in the Congo.
