Virginia Giuffre, one of the most prominent survivors of Jeffrey Epstein’s sexual abuse, has died by suicide, her family said Friday.
Giuffre, 41, died in Neergabby, Australia, where she had been living for several years.
Giuffre was one of the earliest and loudest voices calling for criminal charges against Epstein and his enablers. Other Epstein abuse survivors later credited her with giving them the courage to speak out.
She also provided critical information to law enforcement that contributed to the investigation into and later the conviction of Epstein’s associate Ghislaine Maxwell, as well as other investigations by the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York.
"It is with utterly broken hearts that we announce that Virginia passed away last night at her farm in Western Australia," her family said in a statement to NBC News. "She lost her life to suicide, after being a lifelong victim of sexual abuse and sex trafficking."
"Virginia was a fierce warrior in the fight against sexual abuse and sex trafficking. She was the light that lifted so many survivors," the statement said. “In the end, the toll of abuse is so heavy that it became unbearable for Virginia to handle its weight."
Raised primarily in Florida, Giuffre had a troubled childhood. She said she was abused by a family friend, triggering a downward spiral that led to her living on the streets for a time as a teenager.
She was attempting to rebuild her life when she met Maxwell, Epstein’s close confidant. Maxwell groomed her to be sexually abused by Epstein, and that abuse continued from 1999 to 2002, according to Giuffre. Giuffre also alleged that Epstein trafficked her to his powerful friends, including Prince Andrew and French modeling agent Jean-Luc Brunel.

I don't think so. She was just released out of a hospital after barely surviving being hit by a bus. I don't believe anyone connected to this case that isn't an accused actually offs themselves, especially not someone who has spent so many years publicly going after the type of demonic filth that Epstein and his cohorts are. She was the first, loudest, and bravest, opening the doors for countless women to come forward and attempt to seek justice.

The worst part is that it isn't just Epstein, these things all tie together going back decades to cases like The Finders Cult and the Boys on the Tracks.

The story that she had 4 days left to live was fabricated. She made it up.

She received a lot of criticism for it, with people writing that she just did a disservice to her own story and the other Epstein victims.

I understand the optics.

From a humanist level, a suicide is absolutely logical given the ridiculous amount of stress and paranoia Virginia must have felt. We aren't dealing with a computer game character, this was a human being with a huge amount of trauma, and any authority can lean on someone hard enough to the point that they've just simply had enough, unfortunately.

So I won't rule that out regardless.

She just went through a divorce and had her kids taken away. She made up a story that she had 4 days left to live for attention, but it was not true. She received a lot of criticism for it, and I'm sure that didn't help her mental state. But I also think people need to keep in mind survivors of trauma tend to lie a lot. It's a survival mechanism. Conspiratards acted like her claim that she had 4 days left to live was an obvious assassination, when it wasn't. Now that she committed suicide, they'll act like it was an obvious assassination, when there is no evidence it was.
