Vikings are the GOAT

very overrated.
they lose to any disciplined army there is.
i'd even put my money on the vietcong in a battle with equal weapons, but in a jungle.

Average Viking.

Teutons were Germanic where they not? Barbarian genetics. Vikings were simply civilized barbarians.

Germanic and Nordic races are, genetically speaking, very close. They even worshipped the same gods, with slightly different names: Woden/Odin, Donner/Thor etc.

Yep that's what I'm saying. Genetically the Vikings were the same as most of those barbarian tribes situated in central Europe. They were just a more civilized society of barbarians further north, with a likening to seafaring.

I think their drive to go out and just sail around was pretty bad ass. It's neat they came to North America at a time when most of Europe was fumbling around in plagues and feudalism.

And thats were Donner kebab come from.

Celts and Germanic tribes share a lot in common. Both were known for their large stature and light colored hair.

Give em a spear and one has one huge slow target.

Spears, along with axes, were the favoured weapons of Norsemen(Viking simply means, "to raid"). Partly because they were cheap. Only Jarls(lords)and full time, professional warriors could afford swords. Most of the Norsemen who went a-Viking were farmers as well as warriors.

The Varangian Guard is so cool. Viking elite mercenaries hired by Byzantine Emperors...

The Varangian Guard (Greek: Τάγμα τῶν Βαράγγων, Tágma tōn Varángōn) was an elite unit of the Byzantine Army, from the 10th to the 14th centuries, whose members served as personal bodyguards to the Byzantine Emperors. They are known for being primarily composed of Germanic peoples, specifically Norsemen (the Guard was formed approximately 200 years into the Viking Age) and Anglo-Saxons (after the Norman Conquest of England created an Anglo-Saxon diaspora, part of which found employment in Constantinople)

They were a distinctly different people.
Of course. They are as different as are slavs. Ancient romans did however like to point out the similarities of stature, pale skin and light hair of the various Barbarian tribes... Whether the Celtic Gauls or the Germanics

There was some overlap, though. Especially in Roman times. Historians are still not sure whether the Cimbri were a Celtic or Germanic tribe, for example.

More so than that. I always felt the attempts to connect the Celts with the Germanic people were Nordicism proponents trying to bolster there own silly racial fantasies by connecting a far more advanced people with their own. Theres other European peoples the Celts were more similar to and theres even more emerging evidence they may have had their origins in the western Mediterranean see the works of Stephen Oppenheimer for example.

Outside of the size difference the roman and greek populations had and still do plenty of pale and fair haired people. The notion that the "barbarians" north of the alps were all pale and blonde stems from a misunderstanding of the archaic words used to describe the people. Further the people north of the romans had the common custom of dyeing their hair blonde not being naturally so

see this quote from Siculus on the Celts for example

"Their hair is blond, but not naturally so: they bleach it, to this day, artificially, washing it in lime and combing it back from their foreheads."

Also the roman historians noted there were plenty of swarthy Celts and Germans when they were invading their territories.

i'll tryto dig something up i remember reading. Either way it believe it was the romans who sent Cimbri spies into a confirmed celtic peoples camp to bring back information. Obviously if th cimbri were speaking a germanic language they would not have been able to blend into the celts and understand what they were plotting. I know this was used by other historians to argue for the case of them being celts instead of Germanic.

But yeah there is confusion because the romans and greeks would sometimes haphazardly just lump in people north of them as gauls, germans celts etc,etc

Interesting. I hadn't heard of this incident.
