I've been to both, and both are beautiful places with a lot of variety. I would choose merman though. Vietnam seems more down to earth, and the people are genuinely nice, where in the touristy areas in Thailand the people are nice but it's more transactional.

Plus I think the food you get in Vietnam is much better than the Vietnamese food you get in the States, where the differences in Thai food is less.

Caveat: The last time I visited Vietnam was 15 years ago and I stayed there for a couple of months, so things may have changed

I think I pick Thailand. There might be more public transportation options. I didn't like HCMC that much because it wasn't a walking city and public transportation is non existent. The tiny stools are not sherdogger friendly.

Food wise Southern Vietnamese food is the same as Vietnamese food in parts of the US. You can find the same pho in Texas and California. The northern styled cuisine isn't found in the US.

Vietnam in terms of safety is way more safer than Thailand but nonviolent crime like theft is much higher in Vietnam.

Still need to visit Vietnam, but been to Thailand a few times. The respect from the people and culture, beaches and weather makes me go back. Also of course the prices of everything..

Tough choice between the two.

Public transportation and walkability in general isn't a thing in South east asia unfortunately. Bangkok has a few metro lines but you'd be using grab most of the time just like in Vietnam. If you know how to drive a motorbike it's not an issue at all.

Personally I never had any issues with crime in either country. You should watch out for pickpockets in touristy areas but it's really not that bad. The only people I met who had issues were women who walked around with their purse wide open. But you need to more careful in big cities like Saigon or Bangkok. In Thailand you need to watch out for the other foreigners more than anything.

I liked both but preferred Vietnam.

I was there in 2009 so its probably changed tons, but it was less touristy than Thailand, cheaper and had less obnoxious roidhead tourist types.

Thailand looked nicer though and the people were much nicer, really disliked the Vietnamese.

I’ve been to Thailand and it was great
Vietnam had the rain forest in a cave and I want to see that

The Vietnamese aren't as polite as the Thais for sure. I also prefer the Thais. Nowadays you'll see plenty of roided out Russians on big motorcycles in Vietnam. Gyms are full of Russian meatheads or Russian chicks filming their ass.

I also wanted to see that cave but found out when I got there that I need to book a tour months in advance and has an astronomical price tag for Vietnam. There are smaller caves that are much more accessible so we did that.

Yeah, even in 2009 parts of Vietnam were very Russian / mob owned, like Nha Trang.

Thailand over Vietnam. I don't like Vietnamese food that much and they might have the worst sounding language in all of Asia.

Disappointment

I’ve been to both, slightly prefer Vietnam. It’s easy to see why these countries have become so popular with digital nomads.

Great but affordable food, and their version of Uber (Grab) can get you across town for like $5 from what I remember.

Which one least resembles an ant hill with comfortable weather and low air pollution ?

Bangkok has the sky train, metro and buses. It covers the majority of what you need to do as a tourist. You use grab for everything else if you want to save time. You don't ride a motorbike as a tourist in Bangkok. The rental isn't like other tourist areas in Thailand.
