Throwback Video: The controversial ending between Merab Dvalishvili and Ricky Simon

This was a terrible call from the judges. This scenery proves why the UFC is fixed and corrupt.
The referee didn’t interfere before the belt. it should have never be judged as a tko.
The referee was right there in their face and didn’t interfere before the belt.
How in the world can it be a tko after the belt?

as much I would like Simon to have won this. This is terrible judging.
It’s irrelevant if he was out after the bell. What matters is that the referee didn’t interfere and it should have went to decision.

this is the reason why.
If this happened in the second round. Let’s say this exact moment was at the end of the second round.
There is no way these ‘judges’ would have declared it a TKO in between round two and three. They would see that he was not there 100%. But after a couple seconds he was fine. He would go to his corner and fight the third round.

This scenery proves how much judges just make things up to favour fighters.
This is similar to Matt Hughes' win for the title when he was choked out after slamming Carlos Newton to the canvas and Big John telling him to wake up cause he'd won the fight...

Who was the UFC betting on?

Merab withstood that choke and responded every time the ref demanded a sign of life from him.
Even went on a little bike ride.

The clock ran out; he was fucked up from resisting the choke for such a duration, but it should definitely go to the judges.

This was bullshit, and just awful refereeing.

The referee pats BOTH fighters on the back at the horn to show the fight has ended.

You can't then just pretend you called a stoppage.

One of a kind shocker from the officials, who all look as confused and annoyed as each other.

Here's a clue to how bad this call was: who is Liam Kerrigan?!

He was responding. And I get that people will bring up how fucked up he looked once the fight stopped, but blood rushing back to the head is just as likely to have made him dazed and confused as the choke itself, if not more so.

I'm guessing you just chose to ignore the vacant staring up at the ceiling when the choke was initially released as merabs head bounced back on to the mat, and then merab only starting to move and regain consciousness after the blood started going back to his brain
I didn't because I actually have functioning eyes.

Are you saying that you haven't seen a fighter quickly regain consciousness after a choke was let go?

See Pitbull v. Mckee 1 for reference-

The legs kicking out looked more like the continuation of a movement on reflex. If merab was so aware and trying to defend the choke then why was his arm limp at his side opposed to hand fighting/doing anything at all defensive?

They are nationwide, just put your location in the search bar there:

I showed my friend Ciryl how courageously Merab tried to fight this choke.

He was helped to the stool!!! Rules says a fighter must make it back to his conner by themselves or ruled tko

about as close as you can come to being out, but not all the way there. he responded the entire time. terrible call

Win or lose, I would presume you'd have to have that kind of cardio to have a prayer of surviving that kind of sub. That he even put up a fight for that long is amazing.

Merab is a fucking monster for not tapping there. Total freak but seems like a nice guy outside cage.

Merab went out cold after hitting his head on the canvas during the takedown, woke back up in the guillotine, proceeded to go in and out of consciousness for the last minute, was completely out when the fight ended and woke up after 2-3 seconds after the ref checked on him.

That is my read on the situation and Ricky was rightfully given the win.

Thought it's highly relevant/interesting to watch today.

I would love to see a rematch between these guys some day. Both have improved so much. Simon has looked like a killer recently.

Does anyone else remember Machida getting the TKO against Thiago Silva? Similar deal, but that was between rounds 1 and 2. I can't say I'd have been upset either way with how this was handled since it was so close and such a bizarre situation.

Has anyone else ever seen a fight stopped after the fight was over? Is there any precedent for that?

NJSAC seemed right on it, so I certainly wouldn't be surprised to learn it was codified and called properly, letter of the law style.
