Usman & DC arguing over Max being the GOAT 145er

Aldo was a GOAT candidate. Holloway is a notch below that, but still a bad ass.

This is true. I don't take that away from Volk, he's clearly in the conversation. Aldo has an enormous lead though. At this stage, honestly, Volk is the only one who can surpass him.

There was a time when I thought Max would turn into one of those champs like Jones, where, even while the rest of the division has a lot of talent, the gap was so wide that he'd just wreck everyone until he got bored with fighting or got old. I'd say that, possibly, Max at his best was the best FW we've witnessed. It is just that that moment at the top was shorter than most of us would have liked to have had, and way shorter than Aldo's. I wish we could have gotten Aldo/Max at both of their absolute peaks. Wouldn't have been logistically possible, but leg kicks vs punches in bunches, and arguably the two best ever in those regards. Would have been as intriguing a fight as we could ever witness.

100% agree. That fight would have been insane. Max can deal with low kicks pretty well, but I'd be super intrigued to see how he handles them from peak Aldo, who would throw them so much more often than late career. It's hard for me to see Aldo being able to weather the storm for a full 5 rounds, but prime Aldo was very underrated defensively. Add those low kicks in and who the hell knows. Gun to my head though, I would pick Max.

Shit, that really would have been a dream fight. Woulda been an unforgettable scrap, no doubt.

If he gets past yair tomorrow, I think he beats topuria pretty easily and I have no idea who would be after that. Time isn't on volk's side, though, so I'm not sure if he can rival aldo's numbers at FW. A big win at LW will do a lot for volk's overall legacy, though.
 
Max is the Cain of FWs.
Aldo is the Anderson Silva of FWs. Unbeatable....until he wasn't.
Volk, on the other hand, could be headed for GSP-level GOATness if he keeps winning.

Volk beat Max 3 times, has 4 title defenses (hopefully going to be 5) compared to Max's 3 title defenses and people still saying Max above Volk and even worse, Max is the best FW above Aldo. DC and Usman are retarded for this. Gtfo. You can love the guy (I love Max, too) but the bias is crazy. Put some respect on Aldo and Volk's name.

To me, Volk is the greatest FW (simply because he beat better competition) and don't really care much about Aldo's run in WEC. But of course, statistically you can't argue Aldo's place and what he's done for the division.

Also let's not forget about the retard that is Rogan, saying Max is the greatest FW after he beat Aldo. Doesn't work like that buddy.

surely as a mod you consider more than just the count? this is more reflective of it being a somewhat shallow division - ie go look at who Aldo beat on that streak
Best was Frankie, whos a great fighter, but arguably not quite on Max or Volks (or Connors) level.

That's nothing compared to who Max and Volk have beat, which obviously includes beating Aldo too.

Both would have torn through the division where Aldo had his run, and continued on. Aldo got a streak in a division in its infancy, as soon the next phase of fighters started coming through he got shown up.

Weird how this forum overlooks anything beyond the very very basics... like the streak. Every thought of quality of opposition?
 
Aldo and Holloway over Volk? Volk beat both in dominant fashion, beat Holloway 3 times.

You sure? He beat KZ almost a decade earlier, beat Chad twice and quicker once, took out Frankie who had a legitimate claim to the Lightweight title at the time.

MTB was on a ten fight winning streak before Aldo beat him; beat a 13-2 Cub Swanson; 23-3 Faber; Hominick who was on a 5-0 run with four finishes; undefeated and then 16-1 Chad Mendes; 16-3-1 Edgar who was robbed against Benson in their prior fight.

If you remove Holloway, who questionably beat Volkanovski in their second fight, he's beaten washed, off of suspension Mendes who had fought once in thirty months, past prime Aldo, and Ortega and KZ who were on one fight win streaks.

Volkanovski is an incredible fighter and I have no doubt he's going to rack up more defenses - who knows how many as he's about to enter the age where fighters slow down at the lighter weights - and add to his resume.

Division GOAT standings are created in the aggregate and context matters significantly. He has yet to surpass Jose.

its sherdog bro, the understanding of the sport here isn't that great. Actually thinking beyond "how many did they beat" and instead "who did they beat" is a big ask.
