Useless title defense

Sandhagen only just got a win himself after losing to Umar.
Yan was the only one slightly deserving of a rematch at thisnpoint.

Sean helps sell tickets so helped fill in while BW builds next contender. Settles the curiosity if Sean striking could find his mark with better lighting or if he has a bad initial camp or injury. Yan, Corey and Umar can fight next. Merab took limited damage so should be ready to defend before long.

Instant rematches should be for long reigning champs and/or where there was some controversy in the decision or it was razor close.

Everything else is a farce

Agreed, My proposal is an instant title rematch should cost 3 rubies.

That being said, I think this specific situation has nothing to do with O'Malley as everyone is assuming as the basis for this criticism. Merab wanted this fight and he deserved to get it.

There was no curiosity to settle

The vast majority of fans knew it was gonna be a rerun of the first fight

In fact, it was even worse the other way

Only people who buy into bs UFC hype jobs thought otherwise and there weren't many of them

I hope so

I'm not saying outright Corey wins. But stylistically he's the toughest matchup alongside Umar in the division. Merab relies on pace and relentlessness more than anything else. He's improved his striking and he's obviously a terrific grappler but it's his ability to wilt other guys that separates him. Last night perfect example. Sean did really well the first 2 rounds with his counter grappling. Both rounds were close. But man rd 3 he gets taken down, gets up, back down again...you could just see his spirit being broken.

Corey is built more like Merab in that sense. Just a cardio machine that won't ever stop. Umar got the better of him grappling but Corey had great scrambles and made Umar work the whole fight. And Umar may well be the technically better grappler than Merab. His cardio failed him when they fought but early Umar had the better of it.

I think Merab/Corey will be a war. Corey will have way more answers with his ability to scramble and match the pace. He's also got creative striking that might allow him to land something meaningful at some point.

Casuals don't know Corey as well, real fans should ne way more excited for this matchup than the one we just saw. WAY more.

Never a waste watching one of Dana's privileged few get shut down and choked out.

And at least this puts to bed any excuses like the leg bullshit.

What did the ufc see in the first matchup that led them to believe O’Malley had anything for this guy. One of the dumbest semi instant rematches ever

The labrum bro. It always comes down to the labrum. That, and not J’ing the peen.

🚫 👋 🔨

Think about that. We were actually supposed to believe that this fight would be different because a guy with goofy hair isn’t jerking off. It’s fucking weird and kind of embarrassing actually.

Fuck sandhagen what about Yan

Yan deserves it just as much, no shade on him. But Corey is a fresh matchup. Merab completely shut Yan down when they fought. If it was a split decision or super close I'd say no problem with Yan over Corey.

But first of all Yan is already scheduled to face McGee. And with both Corey and Yan's most recent win being Figgy, Yan won a decision and Corey finished him easily.

Yan beats McGee and he's clearly next for winner of Merab/Corey.

Hopefully Sandhagen gets the next fight.

Umar should fight Yan for the winner of Merab/Sandhagen.

I agree with Cory, and wanted it earlier. I think it was Merab who wanted to get paid more and UFC agreed. He just went through Umar, so fair enough. Atleast this kicks Sean down from titleshots for a long time.

No one wantes to see this again

At least Merab and Yan have had other fights in between

This was one of the most egregious title shots in UfC history
There have been lots of truly egregious title shots in UFC history. Some of them even turn into deserving champions such as Poatan at LHW. On its own I'm not sure that this one particularly stands out, and it's certainly not nearly as awful as Colby's third shot, but what makes it stand out is the effort to turn O'Malley into a big star when he doesn't really have it in him. He's not quite good enough and he simply wasn't nearly as popular or salable as Dana seems to believe. The UFC saw him gifted a win against Yan and thought they saw the next big thing rather than a vulnerable fighter with clear weaknesses.

Cory himself hasn't done much lately. He's a new face for Merab, but he aint some surging contender
Cory has done enough to get a title shot but he hardly kicked in the door for it. I don't think he has anything for Merab. Umar is the only bantam who does if he doesn't gas

I'd rather see Yan I think he has a better chance than corey, but corey is a fresh match up. So do that first.

We saw Yan. He just had no answers. I might pick Corey over Yan in a rematch too. In fact i think I would. Yan clearly beat Figgy but Figgy had some moments. Corey looked like he was in a completely different league than Figgy.

about as useless as every islam makachev gimmie defense
