US Government Shutdown

Our southern border is already, and has been since 2009, more secure than at any point in history.

Like, I get that it's a fun talking point that you can continually point to so long as there isn't a wall, but there has been negative migration across that border for a decade and border removals were at an all-time high even before Trump ramped them up even more.

You mean its more secure now than when the people here illegally walked over the border?

Smdh...

How many days would the US govt have to be shtu down for to balance the 2018 budget?

Let it shut down. I challenge the democrats to stand for illegal immigrants over citizens. Something tells me that’s where the normal everyday Americans draw the line.

The democrats don't control either branch of Congress.

If it shuts down it is 100% a conflict between the GOP and the President.

Most of the illegals living in the country have been here a decade or longer.

More than half of them entered the country with legally issued visas and just didn't leave.

So you’re saying they had a decade to get their affairs in order. Well, then there’s no excuse when it comes time for deportation.

Many of them have, there have been two or three amnesty period since the 90s.

The majority of the immigrants crossed the border illegally between the 80s and early 2000s.

A large majority entering when Bush was in office and they passed the Secure Fence Act of 2006 to deal with the increase in traffic.

The number of illegals in the country decreased for the first time in many decades the past 10 years.

Even though I'm okay with a temporary shutdown the congress & Pres won't allow it. They'll take it to the edge and congress will act as if they are working hard on something to save the day.

You guys realize that the Republicans control the Presidency, House, AND Senate, right?

How can this possibly fall on the Democrats? Literally every single Democrat in Congress could dig in and it still wouldn't be enough, you dolts.
I read this morning that the Senate vote will require a supermajority. So in this instance Democrats actually have some sway, but it's still on Republicans to help put a deal together that accomplishes that. It's amazing that anyone is trying to shift the blame completely away from the party in power, as though that makes any sense.

Why is there no discussion on the nearing government shutdown?

Have people mentally checked out? Is the threat of a shutdown so common that people are numb to the idea of it actually happening? Almost like having a silent nihilistic/anarchical hope that it will actually shutdown?

Well it seems like you are about to get your wish, because reports are saying that it is likely.

What do you think will happen if it shuts down?

These shutdowns can often be a good thing.

It shows people that the sky won't fall on their heads if we have just a little less government than we did the day before.

Well it's true since they don't have a majority in the house or senate...
I will refer you to 2009 when they had full control of the US political system

The motto was "we kant du nuddin"

If you cant see how complicit these mealy mouthed soft palmed hypocritical bags of shit are, Im not going to be the one to show you.

If the politicians stop receiving pay cheques, then I'm for a very extended shut down.

Oh well, let it shut down so the GOP and Trump can take the blame.

Gov shutdowns only help with GOP fundraising.

The Democrats ALWAYS blink first on these negotiations. They have to. If you take away trial lawyers, immigrants form more socialist Nations, public sector unions, and everyone else directly bribed by the Democratic Party, you don't have a functioning party anymore. The vast majority of the democratic party's voting base relies on government largesse in one form or another. This is why the Democrats always concede government shutdown negotiations. The Democratic base needs the flow of government money to be steady and forever increasing. Any Interruption of government largesse could be catastrophic for them.

The last government shutdown resulted in huge majorities for the Republican Party. The Republican base believes in smaller government. The voting base, and the donor class sees this as a net positive. It proves the idea that we really don't need all of the government that we currently have.

You mean when they passed health care reform and a budget?

Obama passed a budget within the first year and he propossed it to congress within 1 month of taking office.

Trump still hasn't proposed a budget.

The last govt shut down cost the country $24 billion

If you think the GOP base isnt feeding at the trough, ag subsidies, defense contracts, infrastructure etc, youre nuts.

Doesn't really matter, all essential functions still operating. Probably more of what the government should be--essential functions.
That's partially my argument.

These shutdowns prove that our government is perfectly capable of being smaller. The ONLY reason it doesn't happen is because too many people make their living off of other people's taxes.

Dreamers lol
Democrats lol

These people just did their own grave
